What is going on with my guts?

Name changed as it's not the most pleasant subject and I'm not a poo troll.

For the past week I've had an awful cramping stomach, diarrhoea after I eat and the foulest wind known to mankind.

I would have originally said food poisoning but when I've had it before it's been both ends and I had the sweats and shivers etc and usually resolves after 48 hours.

No one else in the family has been affected, just me. I'm constantly paranoid that I'm going to crap myself and I'm eating plain food and sticking to water to try and solidify things.

I'm going to call the docs first thing tomorrow as it's so miserable.

Anyone else had something like this?

This is usually a stomach bug.

They don't always cause vomiting.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 04/06/2024 14:20

Thankfully never, and not even food poisoning

Drink plenty of fluids and possibly locozade etc for energy and see GP

I've heard others go throw these spells and the people I am aware of, ie someone I know when mat at weddings/parties etc are aged 24 to 40 approx and almost always slim to mid-build and importantly they love eating out and those risky barbeques

Good luck

Dh gets this if he accidentally eats dairy. He's only become lactose intolerant in recent years and it took a while to work out that's what it was.

Hmmm, did the dairy intolerance come on all of a sudden or gradually?

I was on an 8 week course of antibiotics (Lymecycline) but I finished them about 3 weeks ago.

At first I thought it was something to do with that but surely I would have had a bad stomach whilst taking them not 3 weeks after finishing them?

I can't really remember when it started, but he would get the odd bout of bad wind after stuff like having an ice cream while out and then it seemed to progress from there. Not sure if there was a specific trigger. Apparently it's a thing that adults can stop producing the lactase enzyme to break it down.

Some antibiotics can have long term side effects so it's worth checking what yours say.

Sounds very similar to when I had campylobacter last year. It rarely presents with vomiting. You'll need to get a stool sample sent off to confirm.

BigFatPuddingMonster · 04/06/2024 20:58

Yes! For the last two weeks I've had awful diarrhoea and stomach pain. I'm reluctant to leave the house as I get next to no warning that I'm going to poo. I've also been having bad indigestion as well despite eating a plain diet. I've been putting off ringing the GP as it's such a rigmarole to get an appointment and I was hoping it would have settled down by now but today alone I have been to the toilet 5 times. I'm going to ring the GP tomorrow.

Sorry to hear you've been suffering as well, it's horrible isn't it? Defo ring the doc, you shouldn't have to put up with it.

I'm seeing the GP later on today, I'm going to ask if I can have a sample tested, will report back.

No wonder your guts are screwed!!! Even after a 5 day course they can be.

Eat more plain food, eat less onions or tomatoes, or spices, as they can inflame a sore gut until everything calms down then gradually add them back in. Take probiotics, actimel, kefir or kimchi type products to help boost your gut.

Me too

Saw the doc, they won't take a sample until it's been 7 days.

They think it's possibly viral gastroenteritis and it should calm down on its own.

I've got to stay off dairy, wheat and vegetables apparently until things are back to normal.

Many thanks for the chins up, appreciated
Wishing you a speedy recovery!!

I'm sure its something of nothing as doc suspects and you will be over this soon

Take care

Pantaloons99 · 05/06/2024 14:19

Sounds like the Antibiotics have set something off. I'd work on that and avoid the major allergens like dairy for a little bit

FinallyHere · 05/06/2024 14:50

While I'm normally a leafy green veg to keep regular kind of person, I find plain boiled rice and apple puree can calm my stomach when nothing else works.

Another thing to think about is if you are suffering g from stress. That can go to the stomach in a serious way.

Hope you work out what's causing it soon.

Frazzled2108 · 09/06/2024 15:43

I've had this for the last 7 days! Watery diarrhea that just isn't stopping. I basically get cramps in my tummy and then have to go rushing off to the loo. Once I have been I feel okay until the cramps start again. I have been to the doctors and am just waiting for the results of my stool tests, also have a blood test booked next week. I haven't vomited and still have an appetite so not sure what it can be!

Kitkat1523 · 09/06/2024 16:13

It will be antibiotic induced….keep an eye on your symptoms….can takes ages to right itself though….can lead to c diff….but usually within a healthcare setting

HardWorkToWatch · 01/09/2024 19:30

Any news, anybody here, on when you improved and what it was? I’m a week into diarrhoea and stomach pain, no fever or vomiting and feeling anxious.
