has anyone ever had one swollen tonsil? Doctor has referred me to ENT (god knows the wait) also went to a & e and they sent me away with an antibiotic even though it's not infected?! Il attach a picture, but it'll be TMI. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Did the Dr say if they had referred you urgently (two week wait)? Sometimes tonsillitis can cause 1 tonsil to swell, which could be why they have given you antibiotics, to see if it helps or not? Otherwise they could be wanting ENT to check for other things like an abscess, tumours etc. How long has it been like that and do you have a sore throat or any other symptoms?

yeah I think it's the urgent two week wait. That's all the doctor done. I went to a&e and even though it's not infected it was them who give me the antibiotics. I just feel robbed off and worried sick. I've had the swallowing sensation a couple of weeks tbh but just put it down to anxiety as I'd other things going on, but the soreness has only just started within the last couple of days, but I dunno if that's down the hayfever as all I've done is sneeze 🙃 I only checked inside my mouth around 3 days ago, and seen this but like I said the swallowing sensation has been going on for a while.

The hayfever has started for me the last few days also! Try not to worry, you will hopefully be seen quickly and it will all get sorted.

Read up on Quincy…see if it’s that…

CJ0374 · 01/06/2024 23:07

I too was going to suggest quinsy! 😬

MLW92 · 01/06/2024 23:08

I've tormented myself the last few days on peritonsillar abscess's, Quincy, the whole lot! 😭here's hoping it's nothing serious & they ring me with an appointment soon.

When I had it, I couldn’t open my mouth, I talked like Mickey Mouse and was in agony. I had it drained…soooooooo painful but the relief was amazing!

MLW92 · 01/06/2024 23:15

See this is what's making me think it's not that as it's sore when i swallow but not excruciating as im sure an infection would be. I've never suffered with my tonsils ever either.

I had this - one tonsil far larger than the other. I noticed it one day by chance when looking at my teeth and thought nothing of it...no soreness, just one huge tonsil. Then I checked a couple of weeks later and one was still massive so I gave it a bit of a gentle prod to see if there was any pain - and it started bleeding (only a tiny bit but still).

Anyway, googling 'one large bleeding tonsil' throws up tonsil cancer pretty quickly so I absolutely panicked and self-referred to a private ENT through my works health insurance. I was seen within days, had a thorough exam, tube up the nose/down the throat, blood tests, then an MRI.

Everything was totally clear and the ENT's conclusion was that sometimes tonsils are big and sometimes the big ones bleed if you prod them 🤷‍♀️ That was a few years ago and I still have one massive tonsil.

I had particularly bad tonsillitis 6 years ago and one tonsil never went back to normal size. It pretty much looks like yours! Drs have said it's not uncommon and nothing to worry about.

Get checked out for piece of mind but it will probably be nothing. On the plus side, it makes Covid tests really easy to do :)

MLW92 · 04/06/2024 08:27

Yeah it's just on my nhs app referred for suspected cancer which really doesn't fill you with alot of hope does it 🙃🤦‍♀️

Please don't worry, years ago i was sent for an urgent 2 week wait to ENT as had problems swallowing and food getting stuck in throat(it said suspected cancer on my referral too), I had an MRI which showed something on my thyroid, so was then referred urgently for ultrasound, I was shitting myself! My thyroid was swollen on one side due to hashimotos disease, but no cancer.

I'm also awaiting a celiac blood result coming back too, and I'm delusionally trying to convince myself this is a crazy side effect of a gluten intolerance 🤦‍♀️ that's how much it tortures you.

Just an update, been to ENT today, had the camera down my nose & throat, doctor isn't overly concerned as it doesn't look " suspicious " as in cancerous but is taking both my tonsils out and sending the enlarged one away for biopsy as a precaution which I'm glad about, so just waiting on a surgery date!

I had similar about 4 years ago, randomly one tonsil was enlarged, no pain but wasn't going down never knew why it happened but surgery waiting time was quick just a few months but that was pre covid.
