When is chicken pox itchy?

Hi I was wondering if chicken pox spots were usually itchy right away or later? I know they become especially itchy after they blister but are they itchy to start too? Our son complained of an itchy spot for a few hours and claims it doesn't itch anymore. He has other stray spots too that don't itch. They all look a little different and not exactly like most chicken pox spots but there are so many variables. When do you know for sure? Thank you
