Visiting patient in ICU

My brother has had major surgery - aorta repair. I went to see him in ICU and was so upset at how confused and agitated he was. He is on steroids for inflammation to his throat and antibiotics to prevent a chest infection. Please tell me it gets better. Am I being unreasonable to be so upset? How can I calm my nerves? I am nervous every time I phone for an update. Thank you

Can't you make app .to discuss with a nurse or doctor who will take the family as whole through the next stages of recovery ?

Can you not ask the doctors or nurses to phone you when it’s appropriate. When DH was having mega surgery, I didn’t go to see him until his nurse said it was a good idea for us both, saved distress on both sides.

Can you remember how long it was after the operation before you saw him? Thanks

Bless you. My husband had an aortic dissection in 2018 requiring a 13 hour operation and time in ICU in an induced coma. The sight of him in ICU will stay with me a long time. I sincerely hope he is doing ok. Recovery is slow, but whilst life has changed dramatically for us , my husband is doing well now. Hope you guys are too. My heart goes out to you as I know exactly how you felt! Bless you all xx
