Sharp stabbing pain under right rib

anotherpain · 23/05/2024 21:02

Since yesterday I've been getting a sharp stabbing pain under my right rib. When I get it it takes my breath away. It's intermittent and I don't feel any other pain after it. I was wondering if it is just trapped gas as I have ibs. I'm generally quite windy as it is but this sharp pain seems to be accompanied by wind.

I have for as long as I can remember been told I have a polyp on my gallbladder. Does this sound like gallbladder pain or could it just be trapped wind?

I'm feeling ok other than this sharp stabbing pain I keep randomly getting.

It could be an infected/inflamed gallbladder, this was my symptom

Unopenedpackofmenssocks · 23/05/2024 21:06

Yes. I had gallstones and had my gallbladder out. My pain was similar. All fine now!

I feel ok otherwise. When I'm getting this stabbing pain it's quite low down under my ribs not high up. It randomly started yesterday morning and I had a few episodes of it during the day. Today it's only happened once or twice but just before I posted i had quite a sharp pain again that prompted me to ask here.

I think I will have to try calling my GP tomorrow. What is the treatment usually for thsi?

I’ve been round the houses with this. I also have a gallbladder polyp. Surgeons refuse to take it out and say the polyp is not causing the symptoms.

Mine comes and goes (sometimes months in between symptoms.)

It’s worth getting it checked out though.

I don't have many other symptoms with this. The area isnt constantly painful or tender to touch. Just these random sharp pains. I'm really gassy but that is normal for me. My bowels are normal too.

I will probably make a GP appointment though anyway just to be sure. Over the years I've had lots of ultrasounds done because of pain in this arena but it's always been like an ache under my ribs. No stones were ever found just the polyp.

Exactly same as me @anotherpain. I’ve even had colonoscopy, ct scans, ultrasounds and an endoscopy.

All they ever found was the polyp. Symptoms are gassy and stabbing pain under right ribs exactly where the gallbladder is.

I've had major anxiety today and my stomach has been rumbling and gurgling all day. I thought I was doing well with no stabbing pain since last night but I've just had it again. It literally lasts seconds but it completely stops me in my tracks when I get it.

I had two very large bowel movements this morning which I thought were maybe the cause of the pains I had last night.

I've done an online request to my doctors surgery but I had no reply. I'm hoping it is just wind and gas trapping in the same spot but I'm also beginning to get a little worried now.

I have health anxiety and after a having panic attack this morning my mind has been constantly racing that there's something wrong with me.

Sorry for the ramble.

I've finally had a consult with my GP over the phone and he has referred me for another Ultrasound to check my gallbladder, he's said if the polyp has grown then it's likely to be recommended that I have my gallbladder removed. It was last scanned in 2021 and it had got slightly larger and measured 5mm. He's said if this isn't causing my the discomfort then I also have to give a stool sample to check for H. pylori. I tested positive for this in 2021 and had the treatment successfully but he's said it could be likely to have returned. I can't give a sample though for two weeks as I take Lansoprazole and that gives a negative result if it's in your system.

I've had an ultrasound and the polyp on my gallbladder is the same size as it was the last time I had a scan. However, they have found I have a mildly fatty liver.

I now have to wait to hear off my GP to find out if I'll be referred for gallbladder removal and to discuss the fatty liver.

Hi just wondering how you are getting on and how things progressed with your GP? Hope all is well x

anotherpain · 16/02/2025 18:17

I have got an appointment in just over a week with a Consultant following the scan I had last year.
I've had a few episodes of stabbing pains again, excessive wind and bloating over the last week or two. I am
Presuming it is my gallbladder and I'm now really weary of eating and what I eat as the pains and bloating do come on after eating.

@anotherpain I have exactly the same pain. Have gallbladder polyps that have been monitored for 3 years and not growing, they're quite small. Also have a fatty liver and have been trying to lose weight. Just interested in what the Consultant said to you at the appointment - if you don't mind sharing. I've never seen a Consultant. Just had the scans and a call from GP to say I should lose weight. The pain hasn't bothered me since last April but it has been constant now for the past few weeks.

anotherpain · 04/03/2025 12:03

Consultant had a prod of my stomach and asked my symptoms. He said I could have surgery if I wanted but he did not think it would make any difference to my symptoms. He said the polyp is tiny and shouldn't be causing many issues. He thinks it is more likely ibs causing my symptoms and weirdly since seeing him I'm having a massive ibs flare up that's now affecting my left rib.

@anotherpain Thank you so much for replying. I am going to try to get another scan to see what's going on with mine.
