Tonsillitis? Photo of throat attatched

I used to get regular throat infections when I was younger but it was just usually a bright red and swollen throat, no white patches, pain when swallowing and a bit of a temperature.

Last day or so I've been feeling similar, husband said to me today my breath smells so I got him to look in my throat. Apparently I've got white spots on my tonsils. I got him to take a picture. Some are so small they don't show up on the camera but there is quite a big one there. It's hurting to swallow again, tongue is coated in white and my temp is 39 and I feel generally rubbish.

Does this sound like tonsillitis? Do I need a GP for this or is it a watch and wait thing?

That looks more like a tonsil stone to me. Stinky breath is another clue, those things are RANK 🤢

@MassiveOvaryaction can they cause sore throats too? Or is the sore throat and temp something different to these white spots?

Is your temperature coming down with paracetamol/ibuprofen?

If I were you I would gargle with dilute TCP now and tonight. Meds and fluids, and reassess in the morning (presumably you can't get a GP before 8am tomorrow anyway?)

@PoppingTomorrow not really coming down much. Currently hovering around 38 c, was 39 when I took my temp and then had some paracetamol. I just feel rubbish and want to sleep so as soon as I've sorted the kids out with their tea I'm going to bed and getting husband to take over with parenting duties.

I can't even phone my surgery anymore, all requests have to be online so I will be filling in an online form as soon as I am able to do so.

Not necessarily but they can go hand in hand ime. But with the white spot being a stone if it is tonsillitis then it's more likely to be viral than bacterial and there's no real treatment other than symptom management.

Well I have got my husband to have another look. I have had another 3 white spots pop up of a similar size and there are now streaks of white on the back of my throat. I think work is going to be out of the question tomorrow, temp is back up to 39 and I'm shivering like crazy.

Ah bless you, sounds like the stone is coincidental then. Gargling with salt water or TCP helps me. If your temp isn't coming down with paracetamol I'd see the doc.

I had it last week, started with a sore throat, shivering and a temp of 40c
By the next day my whole throat was white
Doctor said it's rife at the minute

I had it last month. Couldn't get into see gp so I went to pharmacy and they gave me a 5 day course of antibiotics. It cleared up but came back a few days after finishing the antibiotics. Ended up taking 3 lots of antibiotics to get rid of it. It was horrible.

I’m in a similar situation at the moment @lionlass , did you have three lots of the same antibiotic? Or did you have to switch to get rid of it in the end? Was it the first time you’ve had it?

The third time it came back I had a swab done and switched antibiotics which did the trick.

Still feeling rubbish but have an appointment for tomorrow so that's good. Temp keeps spiking about an hour after meds.

Oh goodness, that must’ve been agony @buffyslayer , it’s bad enough when it’s white spots.

Has anyone else found that the white spots have gone then come back whilst still on the antibiotics?
