Antibiotics question tooth extraction. Stopping after 3 days because I feel absolutely shit

Allergic to penicillin, metronidazole just 1 made me drowsy and confused.

10 days post simple extraction started really hurting again.
Dentist inspection not dry socket but inflammation or irritation.
Cleaned and packed.

Have had Clarithromycin few yrs ago, for same thing. Told give it a couple days b4 starting antibiotics.
Waited 3 but not a huge improvement in the pain so thought why not take the 5 day course as I'm sure I was ok last time. Or maybe it's irritated because of the cleaning that pain still there.

I feel like absolute shit, day 3 today.
I've been putting up with the nausea, the bad taste thinking I must complete the course.

But today is not good. My gum has improved massively and I'm not sure if that's because of the clean and the healing or the bloody antibiotics.

Please can I stop taking them.

If it all goes tits up and the pain comes back I've no idea what other meds could help.

Also on paracetamol and ibuprofen but have tailed off last 24 hours.

Sorry this is long winded.

Call your dentist.
Dental antibiotics made me feel horrible too.

OpusGiemuJavlo · 12/05/2024 14:43

Really sorry you're feeling so awful but it would be a big mistake not to finish the course unless under medical supervision. If you stop then the microbes that are nearly dead recover and come back stronger and resistant to that antibiotic.

You can call the ooh gp and see if they can prescribe you a different antibiotic - if you move straight onto a new antibiotic regime it would be ok.

Tcateh · 12/05/2024 14:44

Well I will tomorrow when they're open but I was looking for advice on stopping them and if that does more harm than good.

Have you found an alternative for post dental stuff?

Resumed the salt washed 48 hours after it was packed.

Yes this, Dental antibiotics are hard core. Phone the dentist tomorrow.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/05/2024 14:48

You can't stop taking them before the course is finished. That's how antibiotic resistance comes about and from stopping them too early, there's a good chance that the infection will return in a few days-week and you'll end up in more pain, worse healing AND have to take even more of the things.

Hi thanks. There won't be any ooh gp here.
Rural south west and nearest GP last time for DC was an hour drive to a hospital!
I could ring GP in the morning I guess. If they would prescribe anything else or tell me to contact the dentist I'm not sure.

I'm wondering what in earth else could be prescribed for me.
I know I've had nitrofurantoin (sp) for UTI and not had any reactions but on googling this isn't for teeth/gums

I'm trying to counteract with yoghurt etc.

But I really don't want those biomes to come back as u say.

Tcateh · 12/05/2024 14:59

Oops name change fail tho I'm not sure it matters here in this situation.

Daft really.

I think it's because I didn't know if I genuinely needed them in the first place. I agree with not taking antibiotics unnecessarily. Dentist wasn't sure either. 🤔

Ok I've got one today and 2 more days.

Will make my decision on who to phone tomorrow.

It's 500mg x 2 a day for 5 days.

Thanks for replying

Sorry there's no ooh for you. You could try 111?

I guess that having gone through chemotherapy I am familiar with the brain gymnastics required to take medications that you know are going to make you feel dreadful because intellectually you know that the short term pain is worth it for the long term outcome.

The same is true for you. You get to feel like shit for 2 more days. That's unpleasant and I sympathise.

If you don't take them, the bugs will come back with a vengeance and you will feel worse for longer.

Thankyou our ooh is basically 111. Last time I rang the call was taken by a very well meaning person in London!

Only had a map to go by and did try and send me 2 hours away.

I'm really saddened to hear you've had to go through chemotherapy and I'm grateful for you taking time to share.
My mum passed from cancer fairly recently so I do hope you are doing ok.

I have fibromyalgia and bruxism that doesn't help much at all with grief and stupid pain lol.

I'll be strong 💪.

X

You say you're feeling really bad but also that you tailed off your pain meds. Could taking the pain meds again be helpful? I appreciate they don't fix the nausea or side effects generally, but if they helped you get through the next couple of days to finish the course?

You're best to ring 111 to get qualified medical advice but I'd think if you are having an allergic reaction you need to stop taking them but if you're "just" experiencing side effects you may need to push through to lower your risk of antibiotic resistant infection

Tcateh · 12/05/2024 15:33

It's really only the nausea, the loose bottom and the nausea. It's just ramped up today.

I don't believe it's an allergic reaction but rather the fairly common side effects as you say.
Didn't get this last time grrr.

I'll see how I go for tomorrow.

Yes I've started the pain relief again in case it helps something somewhere.
