Amitriptyline help please 😣

Hello,
Recently started amitriptyline for chronic migraine
2.5 ml per night for first 2 weeks
then 5 ml per night.
Been on it for 3 weeks now.

at first I could see an improvement in my migraine immediately but since going on to 5ml they seem to have got much worse.. now on 8th day of a migraine that just won’t go away 😣

The increase in dose also coincided with my period where I always get the worst migraine anyway so I’m not sure if it’s that or the increased dose of amitriptyline.

Should I give it up altogether or keep with it for a bit longer?

Feeling miserable..

5ml isn’t very much.

You can go up to 150mg on Ami.

kiwiane · 09/05/2024 09:21

It is a very low dose - ask your prescriber - they may increase it.

Thanks that’s useful to know.
Can I ask what dose did you start to see effects if it worked for you?

I found 20mg helpful initially but had to progress to 50mg to really prevent migraines. It works well now.

Grenola · 09/05/2024 12:52

That seems super low.
I started in 20mg and it worked so well, after a year of massively reduced migraine I reduced to 10. Which works now for me

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 09/05/2024 12:53

I was told to start on 10 and work up to 50. Never got there as it made me too tired to wake up, so I got more migraines by oversleeping. I have to have consistent sleep patterns.

cuckyplunt · 09/05/2024 12:54

I tried amytryptiline, didn’t touch them.
Have you tried Sumatriptan?

Grenola · 09/05/2024 17:03

@SprigatitoYouAndIKnow yes it die make u so sleepy. I'm much better nonuve reduced down. And totally agree with regular sleep patterns are the key for me too.

mechanicalpencil · 09/05/2024 21:02

@cuckyplunt yes, tried Sumatriptan but didn't get on well with it.

@cuckyplunt yes, tried Sumatriptan but didn't get on well with it.

Sumatriptain is the poorest triptain avaible and often given first by doctors as the cheapest. Also it doesn't work well in tablet form as it's a drug designed to be injected.

Ask to try a different triptain, there are quite a few available, Zomig, Eletriptain and alotriptain are just 3 others there are more.

As for the amitriptiline you may as others suggest need to increase the dose. Also they do recommend you take any preventative for at lest 3 months to see if it's effective. I've never seen an improvement quickly with any of the drugs I've taken. So hopefully it will work in time.

Justwingingit2005 · 09/05/2024 21:18

I was told to start 10mg and take it 2 hrs before bed.

Mum2threemonkeys · 09/05/2024 21:41

i was on 100mg for my headaches, your dose is incredibly low

Grenola · 10/05/2024 10:01

They also do p propanolol a preventative and I've heard good things. It gave me got flushed so stopped it
