Surgical wisdom tooth removal

JayJay514 · 08/05/2024 14:14

My husband has surgery for wisdom tooth removal booked for next week. He will have a busier than normal week at work and will have a funeral to attend the next day. How rough is the recovery? Will he be able to go about things as normal- I remember my friend being swollen, bruised and in agony for days after hers but don’t know if her recovery wasn’t the norm.

thanks.

Watching with interest as I do too! 😞

Your friend’s recovery was my recovery too…I had all 4 out together though, how many is he having out?

hairypaws · 08/05/2024 14:30

If getting ga it's rough. I had 2 out under ga and was so swollen and sore. I'm sure I had a few days off work.

Moomin37 · 08/05/2024 14:49

I had two bottom wisdom teeth removed under GA and had the entire week off work as I was in considerable pain. I also had nerve damage so could barely eat or speak.

Aussiegold · 08/05/2024 15:01

I had one removed in hospital, was discharged the next day and needed no more pain medication, but was still swollen from the infection and just needed to be careful on what I ate for the first week.

My DH had four out under GA last year, he went in only expecting one but the surgeon said that morning he might as well do them all as they would all need doing. He was home by lunchtime, and eating cottage pie by dinner time, he didn't take any painkillers or anything. It was nuts, we were expecting pain and time to recover but he was honestly fine!

I was bloody brutalised by a dentist who rammed 9 needles in to my poor mouth in quick succession because he was in an hurry. Ill and in pain for 2 and a half months. Cost a lot too. I am bitter.

pizzaHeart · 08/05/2024 15:58

I had 3 of my wisdom teeth removed at some point. All were removed under LA, in all cases I felt rough on the day and wasn’t 100% up to things next day. I was swollen a bit and had to be careful what I was eating and needed painkillers. In the most difficult case I was taking metronidazole as well.

GinandGingerBeer · 08/05/2024 16:04

Very much depends.
Mine was day surgery under GA. I swelled up like a melon and was bruised black & blue from my nose to my chest. They were impacted and very close to the nerve I also had bone removed too due to a cyst. I couldn't eat solids for 4 weeks.
That was lower.
I had uppers removed in the chair at the dentist. Never felt a thing and went to work straight after.
My husband walked straight past me after the GA ones! I looked horrendous!
Hopefully your DH's are nothing like the awkward bastards mine were!

Beargrumps22 · 08/05/2024 18:44

I had 4 out and also had a funeral booked the next day but had to miss as I looked like a hamster! the pain was not too bad ok with painkillers but do be aware you will be knocked about

Jujubeez · 08/05/2024 18:48

I've had them out with local anesthetic and sedation and both times I was back to work the next day just fine

The one I had out with GA it took two weeks to feel normalish.

I think it'll all depend on how complicated the removal is and what level of anesthesia is needed.

pambeesleyhalpert · 08/05/2024 20:57

Upper or lower? Uppers are generally easier than lowers

ChefsKisser · 08/05/2024 21:00

I had two removed under GA last year and was very blasé about it all and booked 2 days off work ‘just in case’. In reality I was in agony, slept upright like the elephant man for days, looked like bo selecta and had 2 full weeks off work as I was in so much pain and couldn’t function normally (tbf I teach, I could have gone back to a wfh job after a week I reckon). It’s really variable I think my recovery was bad but it may be worse than you think!

Trisolaris · 08/05/2024 21:00

I only had two out but the lower one was awful. I was just able to make it to meet a friend three days after and then developed dry socket so was off work for about a week total.

just the one so maybe it won’t be so bad.

Yes he is also getting it under GA. I’ve been trying to convince him to take a few days off.

Thank you so much for all your replies. I’m going to show him them to try to convince him to at least book a few days off.
