Flu - when can I expect to feel some improvement?

Started getting symptoms Wednesday and still feeling rubbish today. I’ve never had it as bad as this and it happened when I was in the midst of a heavy period. I’ve had the usual - chills then sweating, high temperature 39, headaches, bad muscle ache, no energy to move, loss of appetite…

on top of this I have a baby to look after which my DH is doing the bulk of this long weekend but I’m hoping to feel some improvement by Tuesday when he’s back to work.

Is there any hope?

I had the flu vaccine late last year too

Hopefully you’ll be feeling a bit better by then.
Get him to fill the fridge, and make up any bottles before he goes to work.

Do you actually have flu? If so you can expect a couple of months. It isn't always that bad, but often is

sheoaouhra · 05/05/2024 07:57

I was hospitalised with flu last November, and am just getting back to normal now. Its generally at least two weeks in bed, though, even if you are not as bad as I was. And then a long recovery

darkchocolatecoffee · 05/05/2024 08:15

Sorry to hear that @sheoaouhra

my symptoms match what it says online for flu and I’ve been having a lot of ibuprofen and paracetamol and still having the chills/fever and high temperature. I guess there’s no way to be sure unless I do some sort of test. Online it said flu recovery is 8 days to 2 weeks max so I’m not sure what to think!

Remember, when he goes back to work all you need to do is keep yourself and baby clean and fed. Anything else is a bonus.

Flu statistics are very low now so u likely to be that but could be parainfluenza or whooping cough (if you have started coughing). Or Covid - that seems to be in the rise again where I live. That would explain why you’re feeling rough even though you’ve had the flu jab. Not a lot you can do for any of those other than keep on top of paracetamol and ibuprofen, rest and drink lots of water.

Myridiculousstomach · 05/05/2024 08:59

Sorry, UNLIKELY to be flu

Stressfordays · 05/05/2024 09:04

I started with flu symptoms last Wednesday so I'm a week and a half in and although I'm back at work, my chest is still bad and I'm still suffering with lethargy. The temps and sweats stopped about day 5, I managed to potter around the house on day 7. I went back to work yesterday on day 10. I'm literally coasting through the day though, doing bare minimum and still taking regular analgesia because of body aches. I anticipate probably another week or 2 of feeling crummy.

Have you tested for COVID?

Rest where you can, sleep when baby sleeps and take vitamin C & zinc to help immune system.

darkchocolatecoffee · 05/05/2024 09:11

Thanks @DustyLee123

interesting @Myridiculousstomach i had the whooping cough vaccine when I was pregnant a year or two ago.

I did wonder if it was Covid, we haven’t got any tests at home so I’ve not tested. I’ve cancelled all plans so not come into contact with anyone outside my baby and DH.

@Stressfordays im on day 5 now and right now the temps and sweats seems to have slightly improved. But my chest and cough has ramped up and I’ve lost my voice. Hope you recover soon.

It could be flu, it could be COVID.

Give yourself two weeks and see how you are. Cancel anything you can and try to recover fully, Watch out for the cough in case you get a chest infection or pneumonia.

It sounds exactly like the virus I've had. And I know several others who have had the same thing. I work in health care and have tested for covid several times and been negative. I found warm drinks soothed my throat and cough the most. Also, everything still tastes weird over a week later, my appetite still isn't back to normal because of that. We'll get there, it's a nasty flu type virus. Just be mindful it doesn't go onto your chest as a few of my colleagues have had to have antibiotics for residual chest infections following it.

darkchocolatecoffee · 05/05/2024 09:54

@Stressfordays thanks! Yes I’ve had the things tasting weird and loss of appetite too! Thats what first made me think of Covid. I’ll watch out for it spreading to chest.
