Hi. Anyone any experience of ANUG or pericoronitis please? After a spell of ill health my son has developed both and is pretty unwell. On antibiotics and dentist has told him hemust scrub his teeth and gums very hard! I can't quite believe that this won't just cause more trauma and questioned the dentist but he is adamant he must. I know dental hygiene is so important but am doubting this practitioner.Any thoughts or advice please? Thanks so much.

The absolute key part of recovery with ANUG is improved oral hygiene-your dentist is spot on. Google the modified bass technique and ensure that is implemented accurately going forward.

ANUG typically affects young people who are run down and smoke.

Treatment is , basically , improve brushing and give up smoking (if a smoker) . Brushing can be quite painful at first and will cause a lot of bleeding and sometimes a mouthwash is prescribed to help with the discomfort but basically it gets worse because the patient is reluctant to brush once gums get so uncomfortable when this is the only effective treatment . Brush down onto the gums so you are brushing them as much as the teeth.
