Lansoprazole not working anymore

Hi, I was diagnosed with a 3cm hiatus hernia about 2 years ago and put on lansoprazole 30mg (1 a day) and gaviscon if needed and it almost instantly did the trick. No more pain etc. Now randomly at the end of January I started to get what I thought was a virus - was shivery, achy all over, tired, coughing, wheezy very mucousy (nose and throat) and a sore throat. Not covid. Anyway symptoms got better within 48 hours except the sore throat. Almost felt burning. Gp wondered if maybe a virus combined with reflux. Anyway….had to double up the lansoprazole so 1 tablet in morning and 1 at bedtime and gaviscon throughout the day if needed. Also an antihistamine nasal spray incase of post nasal drip. Everything cleared up within a few days. I stopped taking all the extra meds and was fine for almost 2 weeks and then it all came back worse. Long story short I’ve been on the higher dose of Lansoprazole for well over a month now and had days when things were ok but now my throat is feeling irritated all the time. It’s red and angry looking. I’ve a private ENT referral on Wednesday as I suffer health anxiety which I know can make this worse. Has anyone any experience of Lansoprazole suddenly not working? It’s really frightening me trying to think why everything has suddenly got so out of whack. Oh recent symptom is food now feels like it’s sticking at times in my throat when eating. I’m not choking but I’m now eating very little as I’m terrified it’s going to make symptoms worse. I just feel so alone.

Just a thought but is all your lansoprazole by the same company?

come to think of it no! All from the same chemist but not the same company. Would it potentially make a difference?

Classic reflux symptoms. Unfortunately with reflux - and even if you’ve got an HH - you need to watch diet, sleep on an incline if you can and not eat 3 hours before bed. Lanzaprozole will only help in so far as it reduces amount of acid produced so the reflux should be minimised, but your body gets used to it etc. There are surgical options for HH.

Hi, I have reflux and have found that I have to switch meds as they just stop working after a while. Lansoprazole never worked for me so I switch between pantoprazole and Omeprazole. I also agree with previous comments about altering diet, sleeping on an incline and not eating late.
