Flagyl antibiotic and no alcohol - can I drink zero alcohol drinks like zero alcohol ciders?

Pinkpro · 19/04/2024 12:37

I am taking flagyl for an infection.

It says do not drink alcohol.

I am wondering if can drink zero alcohol drinks. My understanding of zero alcohol drinks is that maybe there might be trace amounts of alcohol in them. I don't know.

How long are you on them for?
Could you not just drink something else to be on the safe side?

I will be on them for a week.

I am not going out out to a party or anything but sometimes I like to have a drink or two at home especially after a long week. I am going through a stressful time right now and I feel I need a drink. Not right now but tonight or tomorrow night. I am.dealimg with am aging mother who is so ignorant and stubborn. She was ignoring a UTI and a rash all week long and I only finally managed to get her to the GP this morning because she was extremely arguementative and defiant. I never knew she had a rash all week. I was suggesting GP all week to her but she was refusing all week.

I am coming to a place where I feel I might need support from a doctor in the form of valium. I am not in a great way at all and I need a drink.

She's early 70s and she still has some sense but then other times there's things not right with her.

Almost certainly.

I take drugs long term (not antibiotics) that are no alcohol,

I drink no alcohol beer and wine. Never had an issue.

Octavia64 · 19/04/2024 13:11

Suggest consulting a gp for your stress though.

You might find anti anxiety meds helpful.

Greybeardy · 19/04/2024 13:33

I wouldn't drink/use anything with even trace alcohol in it (including mouthwash) - metronidazole's been associated with an antabuse type reaction and that really wouldn't help your anxiety!

Pinkpro · 19/04/2024 18:39

Fuck fuck fuckity fuck

Even mouthwash was recommended against above. I never knew. Why is that now advised on the packet? It just says do not drink alcohol. It says nothing about alcohol mouthwash.

I had a pocket of biscuits open in my hand and put them down on a sick. Picked them up. I had some sort of cream on my hand and I thought it was Oreo cream but it wasn't. It was whatever that was spilled on the sick. I went to have a look and it was a hand sanitising gel with alcohol in it.

Is this going to make me ill now?

I am struggling so much as it is when my own health and now my mother has not been behaving well at all, all week. I really really really cannot afford to get sick. For every reason. I am already sick.

I think you're overreacting. A lot of people would be dead if the reaction was this sensitive.

Mrsjayy · 19/04/2024 18:44

You haven't injested mouth wash it won't do any harm take your next dose as normal. I'm sorry you are struggling your mother sounds exhausting get well soon.

Usually with mouthwash you only really rinse your mouth with it and apparently even mouthwash with alcohol can have a reaction.

So it wasn't mouthwash but I did lick hand sanitiser with alcohol which tastes absolutely fucking vile by the way. Still tasting it half an hour later. My god.

I'm going through a dreadful time with her. It took me a week to her to her own GP. All that stress while I am sick myself. What I endured from her was nothing more but ignorance and folly. She was sick but she was refusing to do anything about it thinking it would all go away.

It was so stressful all week. Life shouldn't be this difficult.

Why are you licking handgel

Balloonhearts · 19/04/2024 18:58

I'm pretty sure it's only Metronidazole that has that particular reaction and frankly if you'd actually ingested any of it, you'd know it by now. The problem with mouthwash is that some people do swallow it by accident.

It was an accident. I left a pack of biscuits on the sink. When I picked them back up again, I got cream on my hand and I thought it was Oreo cream so I licked it. Only it wasn't and I discovered there was a spilled bottle of hand gel on the sink.

Are the effects quicks. Do they interact quickly together?

I had my second antib at 4.40 pm. I licked the alcohol handgel at 6.35 approx.

I got it in my mouth and it tasted horrible and I spat it out out and drank water and rinsed with water and the taste is still in my mouth and it was absolutely fucking horrible.

I was being assaulted by an autistic individual at the time. That's why I was carrying around biscuits and leaving them on the sink.

Fuck my life.

Yes, it’s absolute no alcohol trace whatsoever. Surprisingly tricky.

had to take it for a cat scratch. Absolutely awful med.

You need the GP too.

Don't self medicate. It's a slippery slope.

MsFaversham · 19/04/2024 19:35

I’ve just had a course of these. I drank 0% alcohol because there is no alcohol, check the ingredient list if you are unsure. You do want to avoid low alcohol, which is typically 0.5%. Mouthwash is fine as you spit it out.

Yes, I am definitely approaching a very hard place. I need valium or something. I do need help. I am usually a happy and positive person and I look at the positives from stuff but this past week was a nightmare and it wasn't the first difficult situation my mother flung my way.

I am currently on antibiotics for a bowel infection.

Kill me now.

Ok so I won't drink anything even low/zero alcohol. It's going to be a hard week.

This is a picture of the handgel that I accidently tasted from my hand earlier.

Will this make me more sick now

Oh right well don't do it again 😀 your infection is maybe really affecting your mood it does sound like you really are struggling though maybe a gp visit on Monday.

mathanxiety · 20/04/2024 17:00

Agree with @Mrsjayy.

It's a sad aspect of having an aging and stubborn parent that the daughter who takes on the responsibility of keeping them ticking over can end up running herself ragged.

It can take over your life and leave you exhausted both mentally and physically and the temptation to keep yourself going the handiest way available is always there, but it won't work out well for you.
