Ramipril and Alcohol

Hi my husband has been put on 2.5 of Ramipril for high blood pressure (145 over 90 was the average I think). My question is about alcohol. He's only drinking about 2 glasses of wine twice a week now but I know there will be occasions where we go out with friends where he would have normally drunk 5 or 6 pints and I'm scared as I don't know if that's safe or not. Annoyingly the instructions that came with the drug just say don't have at the same time as may cause dizziness and offers no real 'do or don't do' advice. Has anyone got any direct experience? I'm really worried and he is being quite unphased about it. I don't want him putting himself in danger.... Odd that it's him with BP when I'm the stress head 🤣🤣

PS he's not overweight and has otherwise good health so we think it's hereditary combined with a bit much booze and salt!

Any advice really welcome xx

Dh is on Ramipril and has been for a few years. Any alcohol can increase the efficacy of the drug so it can reduce the BP too much and the person becomes light headed from low blood pressure.

Dh has an at home BP monitor and it did lower it for him, we tried it at home rather than out as he didn't want to fall ill.

He stopped drinking any alcohol at that point not that he drank on a regular basis anyway, maybe a beer or two a month. So now we both have non-alcoholic beers. We taste tested all that were available and chose our favourites.

Dh's Dad and sister are also on Ramipril too, it was only a matter of time before Dh joined them.

Thank you @FrameMyDoorKnocker we are now doing as you suggested and he is having a beer at home and testing to see what difference it makes. Thank you I hadn't considered doing that even though it's very obvious!

@SatsumaZoom brilliant.

DH has been on it for years and drinks alcohol happily, no side effects (apart from getting merry anyway).

@Hoglet70 that's brilliant thank you 😊

I'm on ramipril and happily drink too (not to excess!). I do take it just before bed so I'll be asleep if there are any dips (consultant advised bed was a good time).
