Anyone had root canal?

Hi. I had root canal started before xmas, he drilled and filled some of it and it was fine! He then put in a temporary filling and I have only just made the appointment to have it done in a couple of weeks. Im hoping it wont be too bad if I have already had part of it done and was ok. Will I have to rest after and for how many days?

I had one done and I think I had all the drilly bits done then a dressing was put in fir a few days, then taken out and filled...why would you need to rest after ?

avenanap · 30/03/2008 21:51

It's not too bad, I couldn't feel a thing. It depends whether he's putting a crown on the top or filling it. You shouldn't need to rest unless you want to

Hi, I have had two done, both with an "extra" root. I didn't have to rest at all afterwards.

HereComeTheGirls · 30/03/2008 21:55

No, you won't have to rest, it's just like a big filling!

I just wasn't sure if it will be really painful after and I will have to take loads of painkillers. I had a lot of drilling done and filing before so hopefully wont be too bad.

you're on the home straight there, the only painful bit was having the temporary dressing put in...afterwards I went to have coffee with a friend and was fine

lynniep · 30/03/2008 22:02

nah, tooth dead so no pain. The drilling and filing is the worst bit (and that didn't hurt me, was just unpleasant)

MegGriffin · 30/03/2008 22:03

I had a root canal done and I felt exhausted after but only because of the stress of having it done, not that it hurt though, it was a painless process, and I would agree just like a big filling. I just happen to find the whole dentist thing very stressful. You will be fine

SlartyBartFast · 30/03/2008 22:04

no pain.
just shock.
wasn't expecting to ahve my mouth open all that time.

constancereader · 30/03/2008 22:04

I fell asleep during mine.

fingerwoman · 30/03/2008 22:05

yes the next bit is fine because the nerve has already been removed, so you shouldn't feel anything

I was expecting a nightmare, but the worst bit was the discomfort caused by the scaffolding erected in and around my mouth. DH came with me to drive me home afterwards, but I could have managed, as it turned out..... apart from the faintness I experienced on receiving the bill!

gigglewitch · 30/03/2008 22:59

should be a breeze - if rather long and boring. The hardest bit is keeping your mouth open for that long! You should be fine to carry on whatever you are normally up to. I have pins fixed in most of mine to stick crowns and bridges on, which is a tad more complicated, but a straightforward root filling through a good tooth is no probs.
However, if you want a day "off" that's another matter... be as creative as you like
good luck.
