I don't know WTF this thing is... it's on my hip and has been for a few weeks now. About the size of a big satsuma. I also think it's getting bigger, it was about the size of a 50p when I first noticed it. But equally it's not bothering me as I keep forgetting it's there (in my 40s and don't pay a huge amount of attention to my body!). But then my husband notices it every so often and goes "Christ what is that?!". He noticed it again today and we were both like... yeah that's been there a while now hasn't it?

I think it's just burst blood vessels, but why isn't it going away? It can look worse than this photo - a lot more dark and purple (e.g. if I have been in the bath/shower/swimming). I haven't banged my hip or been scratching the area.

I'm puzzled, but it doesn't seem worth taking up GPs time for... so wondered if Mumsnetters had any words of wisdom?

Scuse the picture, it looks a bit like a buttock, it's not!

At first glance I thought ' shingles' but as you've no nerve pain then I'm not sure.

I'd get it checked out.

Agree with shingles in appearance if no nerve pain maybe herpes.

Geebray · 14/04/2024 15:52

Looks like eczema.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 14/04/2024 16:14

Looks like purpura to me. I would get it checked out.

YenneferOfBattenberg · 14/04/2024 17:14

Yikes, I don't think it's herpes. It's not painful or itchy, which a quick google suggests herpes would be. It's also definitely not eczema. Again not itchy, dry or cracked. I had mild eczema in my childhood and early teens so I know what it's like. The skin at the surface is normal, if you get me, whatever it is it's under the skin. There's no broken skin, blisters, dryness, weeping, etc. at the surface.

Purpura sounds about right actually... @HavfrueDenizKisi
