I'm due to have an internal scan of ovaries etc next week. I've had one a few years ago and it was awful, I drank the required amount and I was in so much pain as my bladder was literally bursting then they were running late too and I remember being in tears as I couldn't hold any longer. I don't remember them being very friendly and saying just let a tiny bit out.
Anyway I've got letter and instructions through. 2 pinks half an hour before and don't empty bladder for 2 hrs before appointment..I really don't think my bladders big enough! 😪

Weird, I was sent to pee before my internal scans! Full bladder needed for external so they can see better iirc, but I was told not needed for internal.
Can you call the unit to check/tell them you can't manage that?

I have always had the same issue and over the years have found a level of fluid and timing that works for me for a scan. My bladder is small. I go for half the amount and half the time. (I usually go to the toilet every hour though.) Have a play around with amounts and timings this week before the day of the scan. As long as your bladder feels reasonably full by the time you get there, it will be fine. You don't need to be bursting.

This. Internal didn't need to be full. I'd ask.

The GP told me it would be an internal scan...however you could be right as I've just looked at letter again and it says US pelvis. On the back it says they will put gel on area they want to examine and if they need to get a better picture then will be asked to empty bladder and they will do internal.
I swear I had to have a full bladder for an internal one years ago.

Do t worry about it - I can’t hold that much either. I had my most recent scan a couple of months ago and just drank a litre less 40 minutes before the scan. I was still massively uncomfortable and finding it hard to hold even with that much and the sonographer praised me on how full my bladder is and said “well done for following the instructions to the letter - lots of people don’t.” I didn’t enlighten her that I didn’t follow the instructions at all.

Thank you. Glad it's not just me!!
I'll go for a bit less and if they have to send me away for a bit to drink more then they do!
I hope they're not running late this time!

Mine was 1.5 hours late once and I arrived already bursting 😩 got so uncomfortable i ended up having to go but was in tears in case I couldn't drink enough again and I was there for something worrying. Turns out when I hold it in that long I just can't wee anyway. Worst experience ever I was so angry when the sonographer just breezed in late with his stupid costa coffee flirting with the receptionists 😡 no thought for women who are likely there for something worrying anyway and we're all about to burst.

Ended up with cystitis too after that. Stupid berk.

Anyway op. Seasoned ultrasound haver here - I drink 1.5 pints about 40 mins before and it's worked and providing they aren't late I'm not too uncomfortable, so I just ignore their instructions now!

2 pints? No way i could manage that! I've had to have a few of these scans, and I drink way less than they say (usually 300ml) and only around 45 minutes before. I have a tiny bladder and it's very sensitive...even with just 300ml I was almost crying in the waiting room when the doctor was late. Thankfully when he saw me he scanned me quickly and had a loo right next to his office that I could use before part 2. Stupid test. Honestly I count it on a par with my C-section!! Why can't they invent a new kind of test?! Oh wait...because men don't get pregnant 🙄
