Movicol for Constipation

MissCeltic · 04/04/2024 22:25

I have had constipation for about two days and sorry for the TMI but I can feel the stool and I can feel it moving when I am on the toilet but then nothing. I think I have internal hemarrhoids but I have never went to see about them as they don’t bleed or cause pain so wondering if this is causing constipation.

I have Movicol Sachets and Glycerin Suppositories so was wondering if I should try Movicol in case it’s impacted. How often should I take them maybe one before bed and then again tomorrow.

when my daughter needs them for disimpaction, she has to take 2 on day one, then four the next day, then six then eight. She has paediatric movicol though so it might be different for the adult dose

I'm not a doc, but I wouldn't have thought you would have an impaction after only two days - typically it's much longer.
I would say Movicol is fine for 2 days of constipation. Use the dose on the sachet, though, no more. If you still have a problem after that, get medical advice.
As to haemorrhoids causing constipation, it's usually the other way around, although piles can make things uncomfortable.

Do you get enough fibre in your diet? Exercise?

I don’t think I get as much fibre as I should. I will try and increase this and see what happens.

Lactulose is less harsh than movicol, or senna maybe

Senna can be harsh! It can cause stomach cramps and be quite unpleasant.
Lactulose is better, gentler; it's a stool softener rather than a bowel stimulant like Senna.
OP, if you can, pop in a glycerin suppository, stick it up as high as you can and keep in in for as long as you can, minimum 30 mins.
It shouldn't be too bad if you've only been constipated for two days.
Then a couple of days of 2 sachets of movicol, some nuts and dried apricots, plenty of fluid and you'll be grand.

MassiveOvaryaction · 05/04/2024 09:48

If it's that low you can feel it then I'd go for the glycerine suppository first. It'll lubricate the exit so to speak. As pp says try and keep it in for 30 mins.
Increase the fibre in your diet and make sure you drink plenty of water as well.

Took another sachet of Movicol and just as I was thinking about a Glycerin Suppository I felt the urge to go to the loo and it cleared. Crikey what a relief after the last few days. I think I will take a sachet for the next couple of days and maybe try a fibre supplement going forward to try and avoid this again.

Glad normal service has been restored, OP!
But not sure it's a good idea to take Movicol every day unless you're actually constipated.
Much better to use Fybogel every day and work on the fibre intake.

PS - Not a good idea to take Movicol every day unless you're actually constipated because the body can become dependent on laxatives.
As I said, much better to use Fybogel and increase the fibre in your diet.

I sprinkle a handful of wheat bran on my cereal every morning - but you can stir it into soup, for instance. A lot cheaper than buying fybogel.

porridgecake · 05/04/2024 13:49

I think many people don't eat enough fruit and veg. Lack of time to prep fresh ingredients, ditto cooking from scratch, eating food on the move, packed lunches all contribute to this.
I make porridge in the evening, usually 2 portions, and put it in the fridge. I heat it in the microwave for breakfast and add chia seeds, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, chopped soft prunes (sold in packets) or frozen berries.
I make vegetable soup with lots of carrots, pulses and lentil in the slow cooker, freeze in portions.
I used to suffer with chronic constipation and I have found the above really helpful. You need to drink a lot of liquids too.

MissCeltic · 05/04/2024 13:51

Yeah I think you are right actually as I have been thinking it might make my bowel lazy so I think I will order some Fybogel and try that instead.

Oh that’s interesting I had never thought of that. Thanks.

I know I don’t eat enough fibre but I thought the constipation was due to having internal hemarrhoids but maybe it really is the lack of fibre.

The above post was about wheat bran
