TMJ/TN or something else

On and off all day I have had a shooting/burning pain in my upper back molar and in my ear. Sometimes it feels like it's my tooth at other times the pain goes through my ear.

It went off for a little while earlier but started again when I ate dinner. The pain is intermittent but I can only describe it as a shooting pain that last a few seconds and radiates through my ear.

I have been told by my dentist years ago that I have TMJ and I often know when I'm clenching but today I don't think I have been. A quick google came up with trigeminal neuralgia but I'm not sure if it is that?

I know no one can tell me for sure what it is but does it sound like TN?

Forgot to add moving my head seems to trigger it at times.

It could be TMJ, unlikely to be Trigeminal Neuralgia as that often will feel like your skin is on fire/pins & needles and will have you in tears. However, I would go with basics and get your dentist to check your occlusion (the way your teeth meet together) as you may have high spots which are setting your TMJ off. Obviously, you have got them to check you wisdom teeth... if you have not had them removed...

I've had shooting pains like that for a week but other places in my head too. It's subsiding and more pressure now. I think it's been a virus without a temperature.

Do you have a heat beanbag? That gives some relief. Hope you get better soon?

I don't have wisdom teeth, as far as I know they're not there on x rays and my dentist believes that they were removed as a child when I had a lot of dental work done.

It's driving me nuts the random shooting pain and I just can't figure if it's from the tooth or my ear. I feel like I have slight ear ache and my ear feels like it's burning ever so slightly.

I need to call the dentist tomorrow for my DS so it's will see if I can get an appointment too.

I don't think its a virus as I feel ok otherwise.

I have TMJ disorder and that doesn't sound the same as mine. My pain is precisely on the jaw joint.

This doesn't feel like TMJ either I don't think. Moving my jaw sets off the shooting pain and moving my head. I can't work out if I have toothache or not! I'm now clenching my tooth at the back which is obviously not helping.

Hopefully I'll be able to get in to see the dentist soon.

The on off shooting pain has kept me awake most of the night. My tooth isn't sensitive to hot or cold it just feels sore. My ear doesn't hurt constantly it's just this random pain that is shooting through my ear. It seems to stop for a while then I have loads of episodes for a while.

I'm having the exact same thing right now. Any answers on what it was?

Deedoo · 22/10/2025 16:52

@OhCrumbs90 infected root canal tooth

Deedoo · 22/10/2025 16:58

@OhCrumbs90 Where is your pain is it constant

OhCrumbs90 · 22/10/2025 17:11

@Deedoo oh dear I hope you got sorted. Did you have the tooth redone or was it extracted? My pain is a random shooting pain all in my upper teeth on my left side. No individual tooth is sore when pressed. I have a very extensive history of tmjd but it's normally a dull ache. This pain comes and goes but can be triggered by moving my neck/head

Deedoo · 22/10/2025 17:53

@OhCrumbs90 have you looked at nerve pain

Deedoo · 08/11/2025 18:16

@OhCrumbs90 i also have TMJD and pain in lower molars
