Sinus advice?

I had a cold recently which has now gone but in turn I ended up with the most horrendous headache 6 days ago and the next day pain all developed in my face (bridge of nose, cheeks and jaw) so very sinus like, left it until today to call doctor as I feel very weak/lack of energy where as yesterday I was ok minus pain and headaches, I feel very unwell today so doctor said it does sound a bit like sinus but I don't have a runny nose, he asked if I had a blocked nose and I said no but I have post nasal drip badly and it's painful on the bridge of my nose he said yes I think you just have a bit of sinus then, anti biotics won't work so let's try a steroid nasal spray for a week and see how you get on. I'm worried because I genuinely feel horrendous and worried I will get worse, I thought if you had sinus the only thing for it was anti biotics. Maybe I'm wrong has anyone gone through this before? Anything that will help the pain and general feeling of sluggishness? My head all over is really hurting bad too. Paracetamol not helping.

Listen to him, he is more qualified than us. The best thing for sinuses for me has been sudafed and snorting salt water which sounds gross but it gets the job done and all manner of yuck stuff comes up. Take care and hope you feel better soon.

I know, I just have anxiety and because I feel so incredibly rough I struggle to believe a spray alone will work😫 I don't have a cold so that's what worries me that it may not do much, I just have bad headache, pain in my face and post nasal drip

Hang your head over hot water. I'm a chronic sinus sufferer, got a thumper today. Dangle my head over hot water, one of those Olbas oil stick things up my nose, Olbas oil on a tissue and anything with pseudoephedrine in it which has the added effect of sending me to sleep.

Sterimar nasal spray is excellent as well.

Thank you! Il pick up albas oil when I pick up the spray in a minute, is it normal to feel so incredibly unwell with it? Feels like when I had tonsillitis and had no energy at all

Yes I have similar this week OP but I have had lots of sinus stuff before so I am less worried about it. It makes me really achy and initially I sneezed a lot but did not feel full of cold. My head felt like it was packed with glue though. It is gradually easing and the pressure is reducing.

Catsfrontbum · 21/03/2024 16:18

You need a neli pod sinus rinse.

I have sinus trouble and this give instant relief.

Sorry to hear you're experiencing it too, I forgot to ask doctor this but I also have intense pain behind both eyeballs, I'm assuming that's also a part of sinus??

I'm feeling exactly the same as you. I've been in bed for two days with the worst headache I've ever had plus feeling sick and dizzy. Also have poorly tummy.

Dr has said no infection because I don't have a temperature and my face isn't sore so just told me to carry on with nasal spray (dymista)

I've honestly never felt so poorly in my life. I can't even get out of bed.

I really hope you start to feel better soon.

Favouritefruits · 21/03/2024 16:30

You’ve got sinusitis by the sounds of it! Antibiotics won’t work at all, Sterimar salt water is your best bet for some relief! Just does up on Suafed and you’ll feel better in a week or so!

@emilylouisex1

Yes, doctor told me a temperature would indicate infection and therefore antibiotics would help.

I wish I did have an infection - at least that can be treated. Nothing to be done for virus.

I've been in bed for two days. I've got my birthday next week and I just feel horrific. I can literally feel my pulse throbbing in my face and I feel so sick and dizzy I can't eat. But I need to eat to take painkillers for my constant headacheConfused

Oh I do sympathise with you! I took a Covid test just now because I can't fathom how I feel so rough and it just be sinus but it was negative, I've took my temp loads and I don't have one but I definitely have chills it's so horrid

Anyone know how long sinus is supposed to last? My head is so painful as is my face. The nasal spray hasn't done much but doctor did say it won't work right away 😫

Go to a pharmacy. Under the Pharmacy First scheme they can give advice and dispense antibiotics if required - or refer you onwards if necessary.

Georgethecat1 · 22/03/2024 13:00

Long term sufferer with sinuses. If you get a temperature it’s a sign you need antibiotics. I the mean time:

  • buy pseudoephedrine not phenylephrine from the pharmacy (phenylephrine is over the counter but rubbish clinical data). I swear by this stuff.
  • put Vicks into boiling water and steam your face with a towel over your head for 10/15 mins twice a day.
  • massage your sinuses (google has a picture) if you find a place that’s painful that’s a blockage. Do this a few times a day to break any blockages down.

Hope this helps!

RedCarWithDice · 22/03/2024 13:08

Get tablets with guaifensein and phenylephrine in as they help with congestion .

I have chronic sinusitis and wish my GP would prescribe me steroids again, it's the only thing that made any real difference to me. So enjoy the steroids!!

sunnylanding · 22/03/2024 13:09

There are some YouTube videos of how to massage/drain your sinuses, might be worth a look.

I've already spoken to my doctor. He prescribed the spray but I still have such a bad headache and feel horrendous

Yeah there's no temp, I do keep checking but it's normal, I feel so so unwell

Definitely do the facial massage, you will know if it's working as you'll get a salty taste in your mouth afterwards.

I saw the pharmacist on Tuesday afternoon and they sold me a prescription strength nasal spray, it is working although I'm still not 100%.
My double vision has gone and I'm not swaying now when I stand up!

I never realised how bad sinus infections can make you feel, until I had my first one, it's an awful feeling isn't it?

DSD9472 · 22/03/2024 13:17

In addition to the pseudoephedrine and massage, get a neti pot. You must use boiled water and the salt sachets the pot comes with, but the about of gunk that can come out is vile, but feels so much better.

Sinus advice?
Garman · 22/03/2024 13:18

Do you mean you have a sinus infection, sinusitis? Everybody has sinuses, just saying that word or that you “have sinus” doesn’t indicate or clarify anything.

Well I'm not sure, the doctor just said it sounds like my sinuses are blocked and the spray will help unblock them and relieve my symptoms

The pharmacist can advise on all treatments including prescribe you meds if necessary. Sorry if that’s already been said.
