Laxidos & Kidney Stones

I posted on Friday 15/03 about getting a CT scan which I was nervous for. This came back showing 3 Kidney stones on the left hand side however they weren't too bothered about this as the pain was on the right hand side and the stones were still "high up" unsure what that means. The scan also showed I was severely constipated to the point my whole right side on the CT scan looked black. I was given antibiotics for a Kidney infection, Buscopan for cramping, anti sickness as I have been vomiting and Laxidos to try and get things moving. On 14/03 I had terrible sickness and watery stools since then I have had nothing despite the laxatives so on day 5. I'm still not feeling great I am extremely tired and nauseous with cramping on and off, feeling like I have to strain on the toilet but nothing happens. Is there anything I can do to get things going? I'm contemplating just going back to the hospital tbh.

how much laxido are you taking? Make sure you’re taking plenty fluids with it (and for kidney stones) the more you take the more chance it’ll work, the diarrhoea is likely overflow but if you’re having no effect it’s either not working or you’re not taking enough. I’ve had kidney stones, so painful but so is constipation so also take pain relief.

@Shopper727 thank you for replying. 3 sachets a day as advised. I maybe need to be drinking more. Trying to keep on top of the paracetamol and Ibuprofen and also using a hot water bottle for some relief.

Sounds like your bowel might be impacted.
You can take up to 8 sachets a day of Laxido or Movicol.
Don't confuse a bit of watery stool for diarrhoea; it could be overflow, ie, fluid seeping out around the still hard, impacted stool.

@Oneearringlost Thank you. I did read that on the box. Is it maybe worth chatting to my GP before increasing? I haven't really had issues with this before.

I don't have experience with the kidney stones but I do have experience with stool impaction and laxido. I went to a&e start of Feb very unwell and was given a stomach X ray which showed I was severely constipated despite going to the toilet every single day, sometimes several times per day so I had no idea how this happened! Anyhow, the hospital told me to take 6-8 sachets per day for a week straight before beginning to reduce the dose. I took 6 sachets because thats all I was able to manage tbh, you can put 2 sachets is one cup (as long as it's 250ml). I won't lie, it was a rough week, I couldn't leave the house as I was going to the toilet a lot but the GP told me that's exactly what they want. On the 8th day I reduced to 4 sachets, day 10 2 sachets but within a matter of days I was experiencing symptoms again (so nausea, struggling to eat, lower back cramps, straining but still passing stool) so I had to up and down the dose to work out the "maintenance dose", I was told I'll have to stay on the laxido for a long term to prevent this happening again. If I wasn't going to the loo or they were hard/dry I would have known I was constipated but I went every day and they were soft but just not fully emptying my bowels they said so it's the other symptoms I need to watch out for, the nausea, and tummy sensations and straining.

@Nogodsnomasters how quickly did they start working for you? I’m conscious it’s been since Thursday and still nothing. Going to up dose tomorrow.

By the time I started taking them I was just beginning to have overflow diarrhea just like you so it was hard to tell the first few days but I'd say by about day 3 or 4 I was noticing that more stool was passing (sorry if this is gross) but by more stool I mean the quantity of each bowel movement rather than the frequency of going.

Friedseasalt · 20/03/2024 12:47

They have given me Bisacodyl to try now.

Instead of the laxido? I've not heard of that one sorry.
