Low folate?

I am currently being investigated for hyperthyroidism / Graves’ disease - my levels seem to reflect more subclincial hyperthyroidism at the moment.

My symptoms seem very exaggerated compared to my levels (which are very low TSH with t4 at top of normal range & t3 just out of top range)

Ive had blood tests for all sorts and I wondered whether folate levels were causing some of my symptoms:

  • extreme anxiety / obsessive thoughts
  • debilitating fatigue
  • palpitations
  • depression / extreme tearfulness
  • tingly / numbness / weakness in legs
  • hair loss
  • impending doom
  • acid reflux / gastritis type symptoms which I’ve never suffered with before ( these were the reason I had initial blood tests
  • shaky
  • loss of appetite some days
  • depersonalisation

My latest blood test on 28 Feb for folate

Serum folate level 5.8 ug/L |3.1 - 20.0]

my folate is in range but I know NHS ranges can be quite wide.

for the past year I have been trying to cut out gluten - I’ve not been entirely gluten free but cut most of it due to having positive TPO antibodies last year and generally feeling I could be a little intolerant to it.

I know some of these symptoms can be caused by the thyroid issue but it seems as though my levels don’t quite correspond to the severity of the symptoms I’m experiencing.

the symptoms seem to have come on pretty quickly and are quite scary and debilitating.

i’m not leaving the house, feel utterly hopeless and depressed. Not getting dressed properly which is so not like me.

Any advice appreciated

I would say most/all of those symptoms would be linked to the hyperthyroidism. Did they check your ferritin, b12 and vit D? You could supplement with folic acid to see if this improves any of your symptoms? Have they given you any meds for the hyperthyroidism?

Thanks for replying @GG1986 😊
i am going to try a supplement to see if it helps - I guess I just feel my symptoms seem quite exaggerated compared to the thyroid results - they’re out but not massively off the charts if that makes sense.
my GP gave me Carbimazole a few weeks ago, I tried for a week but it seemed to give me a bad reaction unfortunately
I’ve now been given propylthiouracil to try.
Hoping to feel better very soon
