Mammogram and Eczema problem

Dreamer2027 · 15/03/2024 18:29

Opinions appreciated not had a mammogram for about 5 years I am supposed to get it done yearly due to high risk in the family but always put it off I have an appt next Week but due to recently having a flare up of my eczema I feel even more embarrased. I already feel embarrased but having eczema makes me feel like i cant have it done because i feel so awful. Should I just go or should I cancel again and wait until actually I feel like my skin is in good condition which I don't know when that would be?

Are you worried about showing them your skin? Or the pain because of the eczema being squashed?

LikeBeesToHoney · 15/03/2024 18:43

Personally I would go because I think of all the people in the world, nurses are some of the kindest and don't care what your skin looks like! They would far rather you had an important cancer check

Mindymomo · 15/03/2024 18:45

Please go, the lovely women I’ve had do my mammograms really don’t look at anything apart from putting your boobs in the right position.

ILoveSalmonSpread · 15/03/2024 18:47

Your eczema is an excuse. It doesn't prevent a mammogram to take place. Get it done, particularly as you're high risk.

Dreamer2027 · 15/03/2024 18:52

I'm embarrased because of my skin. I had a mammogram done 5 years ago I think it was and I had good skin then but I suffer on and off with eczema flare ups and its been quite bad lately. I've always been cancelling my mammogram appts and not rearranging them but for some reason lately I am thinking more about how it is very important to have it done and so should I go to this appt on Wednesday even though I've had a flare up of my eczema.

Go. They won't care. I have psoriasis and eczema and no one has ever once made a comment. Please go. Your skin is probably flaring because you're stressing

Dreamer2027 · 15/03/2024 19:13

Thankyou so much for replies and helping me to feel like I haven't got to be so stressed and worry that I've got my appt next week and that I've got eczema and I shouldn't let it stop me from having it done. Thankyou for replies.

Absolutely please don't stress one bit about your psoriasis and your mammogram, i do this for a living and we just want you to be comfortable and see all sorts of skin conditons every single day. We don't bat an eyelid honestly The mammographer should do their upmost to make you feel at ease and be as gentle as possible Mostly we are concentrating on getting the boob in the best position for the best image and we def don't judge good luck you can do it!

poochiemaloochie · 16/03/2024 07:27

My apologies i wrote psoriasis by mistake instead of eczema.

Dreamer2027 · 18/03/2024 21:17

So I'm thinking tomorrow I have to cancel my appt on Wednesday because of my eczema because I'm embarrased I'm ashamed I'm beyond teary with my skin and my Daughter has just said my skin is red. If your reading this do you still think I'm being silly and shouldn't cancel my appt because the nurses don't care? I'd perhaps ask to rearrange it for 6 weeks time but who knows if I'll be ok or if I'll have a flare up that could even be a million times worse. Any kindness is much appreciated thankyou.

OP posts:
LikeBeesToHoney · 19/03/2024 12:19

Don't cancel it :)

SBHon · 19/03/2024 12:22

If you cancel it you’ll feel bad about yourself and will continue to worry. And you’ll feel stressed all over again in 6weeks.

Whereas if you go then you’ll put all this anxiety behind you. Go. Get it over with.

You can do it.

lljkk · 19/03/2024 12:28

I imagine a lot of women have hairy pits & bad BO. Nothing about your eczema will compare.

Oh OP i have terrible excema and I go to work with it, socialise with it and swim with it and I've never given it a moments thought.

If people notice it, so what? And I've had excema on my breasts and my eyelids, forehead, thighs etc.

Dreamer2027 · 20/03/2024 07:30

Incase anyone sees this who did reply to me I am going to my appt at 10am this morning. I will try to tag you all later to say a big thankyou and making me believe I should still go for my appt thankyou.

Well done for deciding to go today, you will be absolutely fine and you will feel so much better afterwards that you did it! Eczema is something the mammographer will see on a daily basis honestly xx

coffeeisthebest · 20/03/2024 08:29

Just read your thread. So sorry to read this, I have psoriasis and I remember feeling self conscious about it while giving birth (which feels bonkers given the amount of pain I was in) but this shows how much of a barrier these things can be. I am SO happy for you that you are going though, just because we have red skin does not mean we do not deserve the same level of medical care as everyone else. My children also point out my skin and I just remind them what it is and we carry on our day. I would love it to be gone but it is here for now so what can we do.

Dreamer2027 · 20/03/2024 11:28

I've had it done it was ok lady was nice I told her about my eczema and she said worrying would of made it worse and I shouldn't worry as its important to get your mammogram done. She said she didn't think my skin was that bad and she's been doing this a long time so she's seen a lot. Results should take 2 weeks but could be 3. I'm going for a nice lunch now I'm so grateful for the people who replied to me on here and told me to go. Thankyou.

So pleased for you to be able to put that behind you now. Well done @Dreamer2027
