How long does tonsillitis usually last?

I've had tonsillitis since Thursday and I'm going slightly insane with it. My tonsils feel like they have razorblades to them, my ears are itchy, swallowing is awful, temp keeps going up and down (usually down during the day and up at night for some bizarre reason). To be fair it's only 37.8 today so only very slightly up but I work from home and really don't want to take time off as I have so much to do. Can the recovery be quite protracted should I start seeing improvements in the next couple of days?

Are you on antibiotics?

Justsmileanwave · 10/03/2024 20:33

I've had it this week, started antibiotics 5 days ago & started feeling more myself 2 days ago. I went to the pharmacy & they gave me antibiotics 👍 hope you are feeling better soon! Also Diflam is brilliant!

You need antibiotics. Go to a pharmacy on your lunch or a supermarket one (open later) once you've finished they will give you them.
Get better soon ☺️

I think it varies wildly. I struggled with tonsillitis and it used to drag on. One thing I found that was good for giving relief is gargling soluble aspirin. Hope you feel better soon.

I feel for you, it's horrible. I had it a few years ago and I ended up hallucinating which I think was due to the fever? Then I was prescribed amoxicillan and it turned out I was allergic so then had to try another antibiotic. Start to finish was about two weeks, it was rough.

You may need antibiotics if bacterial, you can get a quick strep test at pharmacy to find out. I wouldn't recommend antibiotics otherwise as you don't want to be taking them when not needed.

But I sympathise as a long time sufferer of tonsillitis. Last bout took a short hospital stay and 3 courses of antibiotics to clear. Awful thing. I'm still recovering, very low energy and bad gut from all the drugs.

When I've had viral tonsillitis before it's taken a week to 10 days to get better on its own. Hope you see an improvement soon!
