Worried about wasting the doctor's time...turns out I wasn't and now I'm just worried!

Went to the GP this afternoon because I'd noticed a lump in my abdomen a few weeks ago, fully expecting to be told it was nothing to be worried about but now I'm waiting for an urgent 2 week referral to the hospital!

I know it's still probably not cancer but....eek! The doctor was lovely, very young and friendly but not afraid to say the word - no 'something nasty/sinister/unpleasant' she said she was concerned it might be a sarcoma and even told me the things about it that made her think that way!

Feeling a bit shell shocked now but just got to wait for the hospital to get in touch. Don't want to worry friends and family (apart from DH of course!🤣) so that's why I'm posting here!

Well done for going

I've found anything hinting at cancer to be quickly dealt with in this 2 week time frame. They found a growth in my heart and the blood tests and follow up scan were really fast because they suspected cancer (it wasn't 👍🏼) and then I've done the same as you with a mole which has gone gross and bleeding for about 6 months and as it's my back I've just ignored it... Dr was very 'well that was silly' and put it through for a 2 week turnaround to be seen again.

I think and hope it's not cancerous but feel very reassured that for this one thing they have been focused on speed.

It's good that you went and can find out what it is. Similar thing happened with me, I had a lump appear on my leg/knee. Mentioned it to the GP and was expecting to be told nothing to worry about. Instead he said I needed referred to have it checked out as he really didn't know what it was. Turned out to be a blood clot and was easily treated but it did have me worried until I found out.

CaribbeanCupcake · 07/03/2024 17:19

I'm in a similar boat/ I've found a lump in my breast so called the doctor Monday afternoon who asked me to go in Tuesday morning which I did. She said she would refer me to the hospital and it would be on the 2 week path way. Within 45 mins of leaving the hospital contacted me with an appointment for next Wednesday!

I wasn't scared as have had a cyst before in the other boob and it felt similar... but now they've got me in so quick I'm am!

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 07/03/2024 23:02

Funnily enough, if it had been in my breast I wouldn't have hesitated at all in going to the GP but I kept thinking it couldn't be anything at all because of where it was! It was only after three weeks when I realised I could see it as well as feel it that I knew I should get it looked at.

The doctor was so lovely, especially as I kept telling her I was sorry for wasting her time because I just knew it was nothing! Now I'm crossing my fingers that I'm still right 🤣

Crikey that was speedy! I know they said it would be within two weeks but I just had the call and my ultrasound is booked for first thing Monday morning! Now just got to try and stop obsessing and worrying and soon I'll know one way or the other. 🤞🤞🤞

Keep busy and you know your friends, if they don't stress you out in such situations, most people do want to help when we have a hard time. If there is anyone you trust other than your DH, who you may like to discuss this with, I would say don't hesitate. You do what's best for you though. I hope you get an appt asap!

wateraddict · 08/03/2024 13:41

Sorry I missed the last message somehow! Great news on the appt!

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 08/03/2024 19:53

Thank you @wateraddict - it's so hard trying not to worry about burdening friends (as well as all the other worries I've got right now! 🤣) but I've decided to confide in my closest friend because I know she would want to support me and then she can share in my delight when it turns out not to be cancer after all!

I don't suppose I'll get any answers on Monday but at least I'll be a bit closer 🤞

Try not to worry. My partner noticed a lump near his armpit a couple of weeks ago. I had a feel and told him to speak to the GP immediately. He procrastinated, as men do, and then finally got a face to face appointment. With 72 hours he'd had two hospital appointments including a scan a biopsy and it's benign. They don't mess about if they think it might be cancer, which is likely isn't. And of it is....crack on with treatment. We're so lucky to have the NHS.

Mistralli · 08/03/2024 20:12

Hopefully Monday will give you some certainty! Fingers crossed it is something straightforward to resolve.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 08/03/2024 20:14

Well done for going, and I’m very glad you’ve been seen quickly and taken seriously.

My surgery is dire. I don’t even go anymore, last time they prescribed something I ended up in hospital for a week. Anything serious I’ll have to pay privately.

Fingers crossed for you OP, hoping all will be well.

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 08/03/2024 20:22

It's still almost impossible to get an appointment by phone at my surgery but someone on the local fb group said they have an online triage option that is underused.....probably because nobody actually knew it was there! 🤬.

So, I decided to fill in the form on Monday (between 9-10am only 10 slots available per day) and I got lucky! GP called back within an hour and asked loads of questions and then she made the appointment for Thursday afternoon!

Made me wonder how many other surgeries have something like this that they just don't advertise?

& well done for going to get checked out.

TheChosenTwo · 11/03/2024 10:50

Great news op, well done for going. What a quick turnaround, you must be so relieved 💐
Our surgery is a nightmare to navigate. I suck it up and do it for the sake of the kids but have just made the decision to ignore my own ailments now as it’s the easier alternative!
Wish someone would remove a fatty lump from my stomach 😂

SoftandQuiet · 11/03/2024 10:54

Thank goodness for Fatty Lumps!

wateraddict · 11/03/2024 11:33
