Horrible relentless hacking cough

Ilikeviognier · 02/03/2024 19:08

Had this for a few days - doesn’t seem to be getting better. Relentless hacking cough, not coughing anything up but wheezing. Sometimes the cough is so bad I’m almost throwing up. Never experienced a cough like this. I’m basically useless today.

Anyone else had this? Wtf is it?!

Also got it 🤧 major cough, I have been sick I’ve coughed that much. It’s still lingering 6 days later!

so sorry, no advice but I empathise!

Twatalert · 02/03/2024 19:15

I'd advise to get a nebuliser and to sleep with a humidifier next to the bed. Does wonders.

Ilikeviognier · 02/03/2024 19:17

Don’t you have to get nebulisers on prescription? Or something?

Twatalert · 02/03/2024 19:20

No you can buy them in boots or off Amazon. Omron are the standard ones. I used a 3pc saline solution twice a day. The cough will be so much less intrusive and disappear sooner.

BG2015 · 02/03/2024 19:27

I have this after having terrible flu 3 weeks ago but I do have severe asthma so I've usually got some sort of a cough going one.

But this one is terrible.

Ilikeviognier · 02/03/2024 19:32

Yes it’s unbelievable- I’ve genuinely never experienced anything like it!

Could be pertussis - whooping cough. Apparently is on the increase.

FawnFrenchieMum · 02/03/2024 19:35

My DD has had it for weeks now. Just can’t clear it. We went to the docs after about two weeks, they gave her anti-bs for the wheeze. Another 10 days later and still no better. Keeps being sick from coughing.

Exactly what I was going to say! My dd1 (15) has had this for about 2 months now. Not completely gone yet, but much less frequent thankfully.

niadainud · 02/03/2024 19:35

Yep, I'm a month in. Started a thread about it. Ghastly, and there's little you can do.

Ilikeviognier · 02/03/2024 19:44

@CrunchyCarrot How would you know?

OP posts:
Ilikeviognier · 02/03/2024 19:49

Definitely not doing the “whoop” if that means anything.

@CrunchyCarrot How would you know?

The 'whoop' is characteristically the gasp for breath after you've had a huge coughing fit and can barely breathe. Also whooping cough is apparently also known as the '100 day cough'. I think it can be identified by doing a specimen culture, think of those early Covid swabs, that type of thing.

FabFebHalfTerm · 02/03/2024 20:17

me too. 2 weeks now. Hoping it fecks off soon!!

I had a couple of days where I thought I was on the mend, then it started up again!!

hope we (& daughters!) are all better soon!

Lulubo1 · 02/03/2024 20:34

I had this exact cough and nearly throwing up from coughing so much. Mine lasted 7 weeks!! I have asthma, so I think that's why it lasted longer. I had to up my inhalers and even change one of my inhalers to increase the steroid dosage. I had a pack of cough sweets at my bedside just so I could sleep. My husband had the same thing but his lasted 4 weeks. Whatever it is, it's not fun. I hope you feel better soon Flowers

DrCoconut · 02/03/2024 20:37

Get checked if you're worried. DS got pneumonia that started with a bad cough, he ended up in hospital a few weeks ago.

Ilikeviognier · 02/03/2024 20:39

@DrCoconut I’d be expecting the “it’s viral”- go away from the GP tbh.

@Lulubo1 7 weeks?!!! Oh no!

OP posts:
Lulubo1 · 02/03/2024 20:50

Oh OP, I have asthma, so that's probably why mine lasted for so long. DH had his cough for 4 weeks. I'm hoping it'll be even less for you x

GreenRaven · 02/03/2024 20:53

Just to give you hope - mine has gone completely. It took a few weeks, and several hospital admissions, and I did start to think it would never ever end - BUT IT DID!!!

and yours will too💐

Thethruththewholetruth · 02/03/2024 20:57

Mine started like that then the whoop started, 6 weeks in and it’s easing now but still there! Even managed to crack a rib! It’s been hideous. Whopping cough is hugely on the rise, the vaccine wains on some.

Swimbikerunmummy · 02/03/2024 22:27

I’m at 6 weeks. Had a clear chest xray and doctor now trying antibiotics before testing for whooping cough.

PrimalLass · 02/03/2024 22:28

I'm just clear of it after 6 weeks. It's been really exhausting and I aged 10 years in a month.

NoisyDachshunddd · 02/03/2024 22:35

Dd15 also had this for 8 weeks. Pretty sure it was whooping cough, her siblings would still have vaccine immunity (it wanes after about a decade) and I had it myself in October last year so also escaped.

I think rates are hugely underreported as 99% ,of people complaining of a cough would not be swabbed for it.

mummybear2104 · 02/03/2024 22:44

Also had a cough for 4 weeks, doctor says viral and to come back if no better in another 2-4 weeks. My pelvic floor is not holding up so well!

Mindovermatter247 · 02/03/2024 22:44

Dd 11 has had a cough for going on 7 weeks now, it’s better now, only 2/3 times per day but she coughs to the point she can’t breathe for a second. Doctors don’t do anything because she’s seemingly been getting better. Hers was the same as yours for the first 2 weeks. I had it too, 6 weeks for me, but mines practically gone. I was never as bad as dd, not thrown up either. We had no other symptoms either. Just the cough.
DP has had ongoing chest infections since December, was given antibiotics but they weren’t strong enough, now turned into pneumonia, which I told him, but a trip to a&e and 2 ambulances later, he’s got the strongest antibiotics and steroids and on the turnaround finally. Hopefully no more coughing in the house after 3 months of solid coughing.
