Transvaginal scan

DD has vaginismus and is very anxious about having a transvaginal scan. Does anyone know the approx size of the tip of a transvaginal probe? Is it closer to the width of a thumb than a little finger?

I think it is somewhere in between. I'm always surprised that it's much smaller than I remember.

They do use a lot of lube too.

MassiveOvaryaction · 27/02/2024 08:55

I think more thumb width, but I have skinny hands!
They may be able to see what they need to with an abdominal scan.

She has "a non specific finding of a small amount of free fluid in the pelvis" so maybe the abdominal scan will be enough.

Its like a small vibrator, they put lots of lube on it, and only insert it by about an inch, its barely noticeable.

Thanks all for your replies.

How old is DD? They also add a condom like covering over the probe. She should mention the vaginismus to the sonographer. She wont be the 1st person they've seen with it.

Georgie743 · 27/02/2024 11:11

I'd say it's between thumb and smallest finger size.

disagree that they only insert it half an inch.

it depends what they need to see and how visible the area is. I've had it inserted right up to my cervix.

I've had many TV scans, they use a lot of lube and I've always found the person very gentle.

Definitely discuss concerns in advance!

I had to have one unexpectedly. I'd only gone in for an abdominal scan but the lady doing it said she wanted me to have a transvaginal scan too. One lady did the scan and another held my hand and talked to me. They said any time I wanted them to stop to just say so. To put it bluntly, I hadn't been sexually active for many years and was worried about it hurting. They used loads of lube and it was absolutely fine. I wouldn't be worried if I had to have another. They were so respectful of my feelings.

TemplesofDelight · 27/02/2024 11:46

The technician doing mine let me insert it and move it around myself, which felt much easier to me -- that may be an option for your DD. I don't have vaginismus, but was abused in childhood and am not able to have smears etc.

dirhamlane · 27/02/2024 16:08

@DSD9472 she's in her mid 20s, not had penetrative sex yet.

@Georgie743, @Bishopsgirl thanks, that's very reassuring.

@TemplesofDelight that's a good idea.

@MassiveOvaryaction I love your username!

@TemplesofDelight it must be so hard to live with your traumatic past - I'm so sorry.

I’ve had a few and they’re ok. I would mention the vaginismus.

gynaeissue · 27/02/2024 17:55

NC for this!

I have vaginismus and had one of these as I have endo. It was really painful especially when moved further in even though she was trying to be considerate. Just wanted to be honest with you as some of the other responses are quite positive

Ratherstandonacliffandsetfiretomyself · 27/02/2024 17:58

@gynaeissue Unfortunately I have to agree with you - also endo here but no vaginismus and it was still incredibly painful

dirhamlane · 28/02/2024 08:26

@gynaeissue, @Ratherstandonacliffandsetfiretomyself DD doesn't have endo so at least that's something. I've had a chat with her and I think she'll be ok.

Thanks all.
