Sadless · 23/02/2024 20:56

Hi all I recently brought a blood pressure machine for my husband . I checked mine which was 171/115 which I knew was high compared to last test I had done in the drs. I managed to get a drs appointment and they want me to do a weeks blood pressure readings which I started today . I have had a headache today since I got up it’s not going with painkillers or sleeping. Could it be the high blood pressure causing it .

any advice
thanks
sal

It could be, have you had enough to eat and drink though as these are very common causes of headache

Sadless · 23/02/2024 21:02

I have eaten normally today but don’t drink too much because I am never off the toilet

Yes it could be connected. Take 3 readings twice a day and go back to se your GP next week.

How's your BP today ?

I get bad headaches when my BP is high. I'm on medication for it now though as it was 190/145 at one point and the headache felt like tiny little explosions going off in my head. Annoyingly, my BP is only high due to another medication I take, which I need and can't stop taking. Prior to that, I had decent blood pressure.

MujeresLibres · 24/02/2024 22:10

It could be, mine was lower than yours (although still classed as 'high') and I had constant migraines. These have mostly resolved now I'm on meds.

purpleme12 · 24/02/2024 22:13

Could be.
Just take the readings and go to doctors and see what they say about it

07whatever · 24/02/2024 22:36

Yup, it'll probably be your blood pressure that's giving you headaches.
I actually went to the GP 3 weeks ago because I was getting a morning headache that wouldn't budge... Checked my BP and it was 159/117... Got put on BP tablets straight away, have to record my BP 4 times a day and go for an ECG next week.
Since I have started my BP tablets the headaches have stopped

Flowerfairie · 24/02/2024 22:41

No I absolutely disagree. High blood pressure rarely causes headaches unless crazy high. I have HBP and never get headaches. Just monitor it and don’t stress - stress makes mine jump up ridiculously. Sit there with the cuff on and do it like 10 times whilst watching something you enjoy. I see mine drop 20 points at that

olderbutwiser · 24/02/2024 22:44

Dehydration also can lead to headaches.

Blankscreen · 24/02/2024 22:49

I had a constant headache for a few months and it turned out my BP 210/120!!

Went onto meds and the headaches cleared. They changed my meds and my headache came back, checked my BP and it was 190/99. The med wasn't working.

Medication is now resolved, BP is stable and headaches gone.
Another med change and another headache, it was so bad it woke me up in the night, BP was high.

For me a persistent headache is definitely a sign that my BP is high.

Flowerfairie · 24/02/2024 23:02

You’re referring to hypertensive crisis which is life threatening. Op had one high reading which is probably anxiety!

Mine was this figure too. Regularly. I know cos I had a 24/7 checker on me for a wee
I did have migraines for years which I didn't realise was because of the blood pressure

Forhecksake · 24/02/2024 23:12

It kind of goes both ways. Extremely high blood pressure can cause a headache, but equally lots of things that cause increased BP also cause headaches. Stress, dehydration...

Pain also tends to increase your blood pressure, and lots of NSAIDS can too.

SoftPillowAllNight · 24/02/2024 23:16

Try reducing salt to the care minimum and a glass of beetroot juice everyday. It can help blood pressure and also reduce the headaches quite quickly. Unfortunately I've found that nothing works for blood pressure headaches for me other than beetroot juice and low salt diet. I'm monitoring the numbers and trying to avoid meds if I can..

More likely to be dehydration as you aren't drinking much.

Sadless · 26/02/2024 08:55

I am trying to drink more water less coffee . This morning my bp was 139/98 which isn’t has high as it was in the drs .

Are you taking it 3x or just once? You need to take it 3x with break in between and record the lowest reading, disregard the first reading.

Sadless · 26/02/2024 11:19

I am doing 3 reading and noting down the best of the 3 with about 5 minutes between and sitting down for 5 minutes before the first thanks sal
