Insect bite

Hi all. Random but does anyone know what bug this is and whether it bites? I'm being bittem once or twice a night. The bites are red with a hard lump underneath and most are itchy but not all. It's not bed bugs (had pest control out). We have these flys hanging around and have an ensuite. Any help to identify and advice on eradicating would be great.

That's looks very much like a mosquito & those are mosquito bites. Mosquitoes usually bite at night and the bites itch

one million percent not a bed bug as I watched a vlog re hotels on youtube and bed bugs are 100% different

it looks like the common mospuito these little b's with the warmer, muggy weather in London, evening time open the door and the b's can come into you home - often night time b's but bit our daughter last week and she had an allergic reaction but she is prone to that, sadly and you are not I'm guessing- they affect different people differently, try not to scratch and cool after or that spray if you have it works wonders - usually these red bums are raised and can vary in size that can vary from about 5mm diameter to almost 15mm in my own experiences - but if in doubt or need peace of mind - consult chemist or 111

Thank you!

Where do they live though and why do I suddenly have them in the house?

you should not have many - it depends if you left window or door open especially when its dark and some light on as they fly in

We have white walls and no clutter and only get the odd one, two at the very most as we are careful with the windows etc and my OH does not react too well to them. We don't have carpets just big leather sofas, chusins to a min and no real nick-nacks - so nowhere to hide for them, hopefully b

how many have you seen? Do you have carpets/pets?

Cactuslove · 21/02/2024 19:58

Thabk you for the reply. No pets and no carpets really. Not much clutter but do have house plants. I've seen up to 6 in the en suite at different times. Caught two last night with a candle in water trap I made. But also got 3 bites last night. I reckon I've had around 10 botes over the last week or so. It's just so so annoying! As you know!

Yes, plants, these b's are attracted to them

Spray a little fly killer around to wipe out these b;s - takes about 30 mins and be carful when opening doors in dark and windows

we air the living room in the evening - we turn off lifts and outside light come on as we partially open doors to air so thankfully the stay outside

We have floor to celeing galls wall/windows and don't use curtains nets at times see them seated on the outside of these windows

they are often about 1mm to 5/7mm long but I have seen a few bigger ones

good luck

I too am being persecuted by these bloody things. To calm the itching rub the area with Vick. Really works!

I'm being bitten by them too, badly. I'm suprised as I didn't think they would be out in february in the UK but they seem to be typical mozzy bites. I did panic about bed bugs but I don't think it's them, haven't got fleas either

I know this sounds strange but where are you being bitten? It doesn't matter how many layers I wear they manage to get to me. I've had bites on my belly, bum, legs etc

I was bitten on my ankles, and up one leg. They've cleared up now but were pretty nasty. Haven't had any since

They breed in standing water. Any ponds near you?

Yes with all this rain we've had we've got excellent breeding ground for them in pot plant saucers in the garden, an old bucket etc. Need to empty them regularly

Pond in the garden which is basically a large field. Lots of buckets hanging around etc will go around emptying. They only bite me in one room which is weird right?
