Breast lump

On Monday I noticed quite a large breast lump while examining myself. I felt extremely anxious and barely slept at all that night.

yesterday morning I managed to get a doctors appointment. He examined me thoroughly and said he felt the lump and a smaller one and the same breast but that both felt mobile which is often reassuring. He has referred me to the breast clinic on the 2 week pathway. I initially felt more reassured after the appointment.

Today I received a call to book me into the breast clinic next Thursday and I am feeling really anxious again. I do suffer with health anxiety - it is even on my doctors notes!
My head keeps going to worse case scenarios and I am so scared. 😟

It is a good thing that I have got the appointment at the breast clinic so quickly but I just feel so anxious.

I don't know of the exact figures, but the amount of lumps that they check in the breast clinic are very high chance of being non cancerous.
I've been twice for lumps, and fine both times, I understand your fear, but fingers crossed you will be OK. Xx

pinkchampagne1 · 21/02/2024 18:03

Thank you, that is reassuring to hear. It is quite a large lump that I can feel but it does seem to move when pressed. The doctor also felt another smaller lump in the same breast that I hadn’t noticed.
I have moments of calm followed by moments of high anxiety.

I am 51 so in the perimenopausal stage of life

I had very similar last year and was referred on the 2 week wait. I had a large, movable lump, but it felt quite solid. The Dr who examined me in clinic said “it’s cyst day today”, which was immediately reassuring. I had a mammogram, then ultrasound and they found more cysts. They drained the bigger ones, which didn’t hurt much at all.

pinkchampagne1 · 21/02/2024 19:35

That’s reassuring to hear, WorriedMillie, I really hope mine will be the same.
Next Thursday seems so far away. I have been googling breast lumps which I know is a bad idea.

Some in my family have had lumps and 2-week pathway and one needed further investigation a biopsy - all were negative.

Its easy to say not to worry, but try not to and stats are in your favour and more so IMO if no family history. Even with family history, good chance its nothing

good luck

According to my consultant 9/10 lumps are benign. Best of luck next week. I've been twice.

All of your messages are really helping to calm me down - thank you. 😊

I'm nearly 44, peri-menopausal and have had the urgent breast clinic referral twice in the last couple of years. Both times it was a cyst, one was drained but the recent one was smaller so they've left it.

pinkchampagne1 · 21/02/2024 21:55

I have heard that breast cysts are quite common in peri menopausal woman so I am hoping that might be what mine is. I am pleased both of your lumps weren’t anything worrying. It is so scary when you find a breast lump, isn’t it?

OP posts:
BonzoGates · 21/02/2024 22:46

Yes I was very panicked the first time but it was a fibrocystic benign cyst near the nipple. Happens in your 40s, Dr found a second one I hadn't spotted.

Second time I had an indentation appear when I put my hands on my hips. It was an internal cyst that could only be seen on ultrasound.

Best of luck. Bring a friend or partner for support.

pinkchampagne1 · 22/02/2024 07:12

So glad you were ok both times. It is such a scary time isn’t it?
Mine is pretty large and obvious. It is on the side of my breast near to my arm pit. There is another smaller one too.
Every morning I hope that by some miracle it may have shrunk or even disappeared but it is still very much there. 😟

I am hoping my husband can come with me. My appointment is in the morning and he works night shifts so he will be exhausted but sure we will work something out.
This stage of not knowing is so stressful as you literally can’t think of anything else.

My husband has said he would make sure he comes with me on Thursday. My mum did offer as he will be coming off nights, but she said she would drop me and maybe go off shopping while she waits. I think I need someone actually with me.

I am panicking again now. I was feeling reassured after the doctor told me that the fact my lumps were mobile was usually a positive sign but I have just read online that breast cancer lumps can be fixed or moveable. 😕

Hi @pinkchampagne1 I'm in a similar position, and my 2 weeks wait was very anxious! I held it together til yesterday when I was a bit of a wreck. My appt is tomorrow so not much longer waiting for me. I'm going on my own because I think I'll actually be calmer that way. It's awful not knowing and waiting, but I'd suggest you stop googling because you'll find countless things saying the scariest outcome. It's easy to say, I know, people keep telling me not to worry (ha!) but you've done all the right things getting checked - put Google away now if you can! Good luck and supportive hugs to you.

Sofiabella · 22/02/2024 17:30

I found a lump when I was 27 and unfortunately it was cancer. But the good news I'm 33 now and absolutely fine. Even if it's bad news its absolutely not a death sentence.

pinkchampagne1 · 22/02/2024 17:35

I am so sorry to hear that you are also in this scary position. I really hope all goes ok tomorrow and you receive reassuring news at your appointment.

The waiting is so hard isn’t it? I go from anxious to calm and then back to anxious again several times a day.
I know I should stay away from Google though. I left the doctors feeling more reassured but one look on Google and I am
back to fearing the worse.

I will be thinking of you tomorrow.

I am so pleased you are fit and well now, Sofiabella.

I have had a close friend and my sister in law go through breast cancer in the last few years and both have come out the other side now. The treatment for them both was pretty brutal though.
I have quite bad health anxiety and cancer is one of the things that terrifies me most.

Hold on to what your Dr said 💐

Cotswoldmama · 22/02/2024 18:17

Ive been to the breast clinic 3 times now 2 times it was a cyst and the last time lumpy breast tissue. I've had lumps in between but now I know what cysts feel like I'm a bit more relaxed and give it a month or 2 as they usually disappear by themselves. If not then I see a GP.

pinkchampagne1 · 23/02/2024 07:08

Thank you for sharing your stories. I am hoping my lumps might be cysts but it doesn’t really feel soft and squishy.
I find the anxiety hits me first thing in the morning.

daisypond · 23/02/2024 07:14

I have had breast cancer twice, and neither time were there any lumps at all. So, It’s good you spotted something unusual, and it’s good you saw the doctor, and it’s good the doctor referred you. If it is cancer - and it probably won’t be - then it can be treated, usually with curable intent.

pinkchampagne1 · 23/02/2024 07:17

Sorry to hear you have been through breast cancer twice, daisypond. I hope you are ok now. Did your cancer get picked up on your routine mammogram? This has recently happened to someone I know.
