Numb cervix? Felt nothing at pap test

Cantthinkofacoolname · 17/02/2024 09:45

Sorry if this is a daft question, but is it normal to not even feel a scratch during a pap?

Always felt like a tiny scrape or pinch sensation in the past but went yesterday and didn't even know the nurse had done it until she said so.

I have bad anxiety and am normally hyper aware. Has anyone ever had a pap test and not even felt a scrape on the cervix, when they have done previously?

Sorry if I sound daft for wondering. Didn't know if it's normal to sometimes not feel it.

Tia

Normal IME, I never feel a thing.

I've never had an issue with smear tests - all the reports from others about bad experiences are not something that I've ever been through.

Remember that horror stories about pain and fear during anything at all - in this case smear tests - are the extreme end of people's experiences, which also suggests that the opposite end of the spectrum is those of us who have no pain or fear at all.

I’ve never felt anything either. It’s ts always been quick and painless for me.

There are actually very few nerve endings on your cervix! Sometimes I feel my smear being taken, sometimes I don’t. Can depend on where you are in your cycle (sometimes your cervix will present itself willingly, sometimes you need to have a bit of a hunt!), or maybe you just had a very gentle nurse!

I take smears every day and the feedback is usually “wow, that was quick, I didn’t even feel that!” as I’ve had a lot of practice and can get in, do what I need to do quickly and get out again without causing my patient unnecessary pain or distress.

It's more normal not to feel it than to feel it so I wouldn't worry

I never feel anything either, and never had an issue with stretch and sweeps, vaginal exams during labour etc.

Felt it a lot when I was younger. Since having the babies I don’t even flinch.

I'm the same, I always just put it down to the nurses technique. 90% of the time I don't feel it at all (I've had loads because of previous cancerous cells too)
