Good evening,

my names Elena I am currently anxiously writing from a hospital bed, hopefully looking for some advise/reassurance
I have been unwell for over a week with a fever, chills, cough, fatigue and loss of appetite typical cold symptoms, I got really bad on Tuesday very weak couldn’t get temp down called 111 they advised to go a&e went a&e they did blood tests and said infection so gave me loads of antibiotics and sent me home, got back home and took my antibiotics and vomited straight away, couldn’t keep nothing down felt so weak so went back into hospital they put me on a drip because I was dehydrated and started me on iv antibiotics, anyway today I feel a lot better and was expecting to go home however the doctor said my latest blood test showed low levels of neutrophils and that I need to stay in so they can do loads of tests to see why they are so low, of course I Google it and the first thing that comes up is Leukemia so im so worried, they said they are going to leave me in at least another few more days to test blood daily and see if it comes back up, I’m still on antibiotics. Anyone had anything similar? Would really appreciate some kind words as I suffer with health anxiety.
thank you

Hi Elena. I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your concern but I'm happy to chat with you while you wait for someone with more knowledge to show up.

If I were you I'd ring the call button and explain how anxious you are and ask if anyone is able to explain the things they are testing for and how likely they are.

Thank you, I did speak to the doctor earlier and explain that I was very anxious and if he could explain it to me in detail, which he did he was very nice and reassuring but I am still worried

Thats worrying for you, but if you are in hospital they will keep a close eye on you.
I have had similar and after antibiotics they gave me a blood transfusion. After I was dis charged, they checked me again after a week, then again after a few weeks etc.
It wasn’t an instantaneous fix but they wanted to make sure the count was steadily improving.
it’s scary, especially while you feel rotten. But you are in the right place.

It doesn't have to be leukaemia OP. Viral induced neutropenia is a possibility or neutropenic sepsis. I would ask one of the doctors or nurses to explain what they are suspecting.

ye that what I ready online, they took about 10 different blood samples today for all sorts of viruses, they just checking if anything like that could be the cause, they saying my iron is low so also could be a cause as I wasn’t really eating I was vomiting and had diarrhoea.

Something as simple as low vitamin B12 can cause low neutrophils. Or it could simply be caused by your body fighting whatever infection you’ve got. They just want to check to make sure it’s not something sinister - unlikely but it’s best to check. Hope you feel better soon.

Lumiodes
