Hello

A nurse friend told me last night I should stop taking Omeprazole, take 2 tablets daily with severe accid refulx for 15 odd years.

My friend said try "Probio7" - Readig up on it its tables for gut bacteria.
My OH said don't as it can't replace Omeprazole, what do you think?

Thanks.

What was your omeprazole prescribed for? Surely your GP will opine?

I'm interested in hearing replies as well OP. I have taken one Omeprazole tablet for around the same length of time. I have tried to stop, but acid reflux immediately returns. I think there has been a growing concern recently that long term use can increase a risk of cancer (marginally). The problem is of course that acid reflux also heightens a risk of cancer... so we're between a rock and a hard place!

I switched to Nexium and on tablet lasts for 24hrs ♥️

Have you had tests to rule out underlining issues.

OH has been prescribed Lanzaprole as an alternative.

Nexium (over the counter) is very good.

Thank you all.

Does Lanzeprole have fewer long-term side effects?

I am also looking for omeprazole alternatives for myself and have just ordered some limonene supplements. Limonene is a terpene extracted from orange peel. There is lots of anecdotal evidence that this is effective for acid reflux and is also anti-inflammatory, anti oxidant and anti-anxiety. It's fairly cheap so worth a try!

Three words

Nexium, Maalox, altacite plus

DistinguishedSocialCommenator · 14/02/2024 21:36

The reason i asked is as i have read long term use is not good - therefore any alternatives that are ok longer term

Tried them all, had an endoscopy as well. Now on Famotidine - best one for me, no breakthrough heartburn and no side effects. It was only after the Endoscopy that the consultant switched me over.

They will have to prise it from my cold dead hands!
