5 week old baby, bottle fed seems to be having a tough time at the moment . Seems very unsettled and clingy. Usually sleeps like nothing else but only lightly at the moment, and cries if she realises she's not being held. Face is flushed but no temperature, and hates, hates pooing. She seems to be holding it in until she's bursting then has to scream and cry when forced to poop. Poop is yellow and pastey. Also seems to be bringing up food a lot not vomiting but just the usual spit up but more than normal. Is either milky or cottage cheesey. Appetite has gone through the roof, and even tho has taken 5oz and refuses any more, will cry and scream for another half oz 2 hours later. Poor thing also seems to have a stack of wind which I can't get her to bring up!

Will be making a docs appt but obviously its the bank hols. I hate seeing my little girl crying [distressed parent emote]! Please, any suggestions? I'd be grateful for any input, thanks so much.

Just checked, you can get the Hipp Fennel tea in UK but it is not recommended until after 4 mths.

Funnily enough, in Germany it is recommended from the first week and I know that I gave my DCs some from very early on.

I would try out the first stage formula again though, before thinking about anything else.

We still have a carton of farleys formula, we are going to try that for the next few feeds to see if it helps

WanderingTrollegg · 22/03/2008 22:03

Are you using ready made up formula?

Makes babies sick ime.

Go for powder.

Vegeeta · 23/03/2008 00:17

Sorry for not being clear.

We are using the powdered version that we have to mix up like normal

I'd switch back to normal aptamil - I thought the extra hungry one was notorious for bunging them up? Esp at such a young age

my sister gives her little 6 week old a drop of cooled boiled water, to settle if she has tummy ache.
Worth a try?

sorry your LO isn't too well.

just wanted to add that with the massage on her tummy, make sure you do circles in a clockwise motion to follow the natural coils of the bowel, or you can make things worse.

hope she is better soon.

Have you tried some of the comfort milk, Aptimil do an easy digest, Cow and Gate do one as well. I remember this well with my son when he was a few weeks old, it was horrible and changing his formula really helps. He settled better on Apt easy digest. I don't know if you have a swing, or can borrow one as this helped my son as well.

When DS was tiny he got badly constipated and the doc recommended putting an extra ounce of water in each bottle. It really helped.

I know they say you shouldn't mess about with how you make up the bottles but that is just to stop people adding an extra scoop of formula!
