Infected cut??

Dd does cross country running. She had a race yesterday that was really muddy and wet - she came back covered in mud up to her waist.

She cut her inner thigh in the race - goodness knows what on - and today the cut is red, itchy, raised and hot.

She went for a run today and says her whole thigh muscle is sore.

Her tetanus vaccine is up to date, she has put on savlon and taken piriton.

Anything else I can consider? Does she need to see the GP?

I'm not a doctor but I have had quite a few infected cuts in my lower limbs.
Has she got a red stripe leading from the wound?
Any fever any swollen lymph nodes?
Sometimes they resolve overnight, but if it's not better in the morning
I would see the GP asap, she might need antibiotics.

Is it red round the cut like radiating out? Or is the thigh itchy and hot in a way that could be a rash like a heat rash from her running gear or a thrush type rash even- and not related to the cut?
A GP visit doesn’t sound necessary- I’d go to a pharmacy first and if they advise the GP then fine…

If it’s on her inner thigh, has it been rubbed and aggravated by running again today? If it doesn’t show signs of worsening, is it worth resting for a day and seeing if it calms down?

I agree, show it to a pharmacist

I was thinking about pharmacist first, thanks.

No red lines or stripes radiating out.

No fever, feels well otherwise (she was worried about the 'mud' she was running through being cow shit so is concerned that infection has got into her cut).

No thrush, no running gear - the cut was below her shorts, and her thighs don't rub together!

She's on 50-mile weeks. Did a ten-mile run today, which is when she noticed the muscle was sore. She doesn't want to take time off training unless necessary...

What did the pharmacist say @hellsBells246

hellsBells246 · 13/02/2024 17:39

Well, he was a bit rubbish. Peered at the cut, didn't touch it (it was warm) then prescribed some cream. Got home and found that the cream is contraindicated if you have acne, like dd, so I returned it and got savlon...

Dd says it's ok.
