Fungal toe nails infection

What’s best for this? Had gel toe nails for past 2 years and think they just ignored this and now it seems to be on odd nails. I did try to treat it a year ago but seemed to take ages to work. With tea tree oil and then Boots Advanced nail treatment liquid and filing toenails.

Want nice toe nails again!

My Gp would not prescribe medication for my one fungal toe nail.
So starting last June I mixed teatree oil with olive oil and painted it on once a day. The fungus has gone after having it for about seven years

@fluffyduvetcover wow! that was good. Do you mind telling us what proportions of tea tree oil in olive oil please? And also, how many months did it take?

My trouble is often forgetting to apply regularly, but want to try something. I can't take the tablets as I'm on an immunosuppresent .

I have found the only thing that helps is not wearing nail varnish, mine is slowly growing out a bit and I have tried various over the counter potions that don't really work well but if I put nail varnish on it just comes back. I got some hefty clippers and clip it off as it grows out.

You can apparently get this… medicated polish for fungal toe nails which come summer I may try.

I was doing much the same as you though @BobnLen but it’s so slow!

I may try that polish, thanks for linking @Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain just occasionally in the summer but not leave it on too long. Last summer my big toenail on one foot and the one next to it were particularly vile, my big toenail was half brownish and the next one completely brownish and thickened, they have mainly grown out now and a lot better. The middle toenail on my other foot peels and is a bit whitish but much better. My other toenails just had a bit of a white bloom but that has grown out now.

I've been painting my daughters weekly for over a year. Nearly sorted now. Just 2 to grow out. However we have had it on prescription otherwise it would have cost a fortune.

How old is your daughter? My child has it too

fluffyduvetcover · 12/02/2024 07:38

OP I used half and half ( teatree oil and olive oil but any old cooking oil would do) I started June 2023 and painted it on every single day without fail and it was just about gone by Christmas. I stopped using then and I can say it's completely gone now.
Just starting my old Dad on the same treatment as he has it on every toenail
Just a word of warning, don't let the solution touch your skin or it can make it quite sore

fluffyduvetcover · 12/02/2024 07:39

And the other thing I did was to leave my nail exposed to the air every day ( used to hide toe away in trainers as so ugly)
Also saw that cutting back on sugar is helpful but can't say I use very much anyway

leafybrew · 12/02/2024 08:16

@fluffyduvetcover thanks for that - really helpful.

Iamblossom · 12/02/2024 08:18

I got a prescription from the doctor for tablets and it cleared it up on my nails. Nothing else worked. Wouldn't even consider going for a pedicure or getting my toes professionally painted if I had a fungal infection
