Is my breathing not normal?

I am overweight. Exactly 20kg over what would make fall back into the bracket of a healthy bmi. Currently I'm in the obese category. I hardly exercise and yes I'm not eating great but believe me when I say I want this to change.

Can someone please advise me are these considered "normal" when being overweight or could there be an underlying issue?

  • easily out of breath
  • I sweat very quickly even if I'm just walking. I'm very quickly hot and tired and struggling to keep a normal breath.
  • my legs hurt when I do walk
  • I'm always really hot and even more so when it comes to the time of the month.

I'd appreciate any advice. Doctors always tell me to just lose weight. I'm 32 years old.

All directly weight related I would say and would disappear if you lost weight. Imagine if you did everything in life while carrying a weighted rucksack. That would make you sweat and out of breath.
Easy to say but you did ask.

I appreciate the direct response. I know what I need to do then!

Yes it could well be related to your weight, however just because you are overweight doesn't automatically mean that any health issue you have must be due to that.

I'm more overweight than you and I tend to run hot, but I don't get out of breath easily just doing normal day to day things.

I would have a think about when the breathlessness started - has it got worse gradually as your weight has increased or it did start more suddenly? Does it come on with very little physical exertion or only if you're walking briskly, for example?

There are other conditions besides being overweight which can cause breathlessness so if you have any doubt about whether it's your weight causing it, get it checked out, just as a slim person would.
