How bad is it just to wear one multifocal contact lens?

I use multifocal contact lenses and my left eye prescription is around + 3.75 and my right eye is around +1.75. I find contact lenses so hard to tolerate and really uncomfortable and I've honestly tried everything. Every drop, every brand of contact lenses, dailies, monthlies etc. I've had so many appointments at the optician too. I'm now on Total 1 and they are just about tolerable but my right eye is always so sore when I wear them after a while. It's almost as if the shape of my contact lens doesn't match the shape of my eyeball. I know that sounds weird but I always need to almost press on my eyelid to flatten the contact lens and it always feels like a foreign body and makes my eyeball red and inflamed.
I couldn't handle it any more today so I took out my right contact lens and have managed great with just my left one all day. I can read everything! My distance seems ok too.
How bad is this does anyone know? I will speak to my optician again but thought I'd ask here too. Thanks.

I think I'd be wearing glasses in this situation, just to avoid sore eyes!

You might get a headache, but it won't hurt as long as you're over 25ish and your vision has stopped developing. Note I am not qualified to give this opinion!

Thanks @YesThatsATurdOnTheRug I really hate glasses. I sometimes need to wear a mask at work (hospital) and glasses get steamed up so would just really love to tolerate contacts!

I had exactly the same problem and frequently only wore one basically as I kept having to remove the one in my right eye. I had repeated inflammation in the right eye until I finally gave up snd wore glasses.

Maybe it is the wrong shape , perhaps you need a toric one for that eye as you may have astigmatism.

Ive gone a full day without a lense in my better eye before and it was fine . I wouldn't do it everyday.

Thanks all. I do have an astigmatism and wear toric contact lenses already. The relief from not wearing my right eye contact all day is amazing!

I have astigmatism in one eye and not the other, and what you're describing sounds like how it feels when I accidentally get my lenses mixed up. Might be worth asking your optician to check for that specifically.

I’ve been doing it for 23 years, since I had a corneal graft in one eye. I just wear a lens in the other eye. My glasses just have clear glass on one side.

I only ever have one contact lens in, as I can see clearly with just the one lens in my worse eye. My optician says it's absolutely fine (though she knows I mostly wear glasses; I use contacts very occasionally)

pharmachameleon · 08/02/2024 19:47

Thanks all. I speak to my optician when I get a chance. I would hope they have checked that I have an astigmatism in both eyes as I have been examined so many times over the last while 🙈

Not multi focal but I only wear one contact lense as my eyes are totally different. I have astigmatism in one and it is a lazy eye. The other is a normal shape and has become short sighted due to compensating for the other. This is the one I wear a contact lense in and I've never had any issues. I've tried one in the other eye but cannot tolerate it and it doesn't improve my vision anyway.
