Scabies but cant find prescription meds anywhere

DS has been itching like mad for a few weeks and went to the GP yesterday. He was diagnosed with scabies and the GP has given him a prescription for Lyclear.

The GP didn't mention anything else to him but Googling suggests we need to treat all members of our household as well as boil washing clothes and bedding.

I managed to get DS's prescription for Lyclear last night from a local chemist but I cant find any more in any chemists locally to treat the rest of us. Again, Google suggests there is a national shortage.

Has anyone else experienced this, and did you find any solution? DS is in a real mess with itching and my elder DS has got final year uni exams in a couple of months so I am worried about him catching it as well.

There is a shortage on treatment at the moment unfortunately. I had to treat my whole family due to an outbreak at work as a precaution and trying to find it was a nightmare. They also do a tablet version however they are very hesitant to prescribe this because of the cost and also because the cream/lotion tends to work better. The vest u can do is call around pharmacies and find out if they have any or if possible to buy the oral treatment

Can you order any online? I know the prices are ridiculous at the moment. We have had a case of in out family and I've developed a rash. It has been an absolute nightmare getting rid of them even with 2 doses of cream 😭

Contact an online pharmacy and see if they have them.

I'm using Chemist4U at the moment due to similar issues with my migraine medication. I was looking for them for weeks and weeks and hit up pharmacies in a 50 mile radius with no luck. They had them all on the shelf!

Mummyofthewildones · 11/02/2024 19:21

You can buy it from online pharmacies, permethrin is the active ingredient.

Totallybannanas · 11/02/2024 19:37

Boots online have some

eleflump · 11/02/2024 22:58

Thank you - managed to get 3 tubes at a chemist and then ordered another 7 online from Boots on Thursday - it's not cheap is it but some of the prices at the online pharmacies are ridiculous!

Sorry to hear you're struggling with it too @Totallybannanas - it's a nightmare isn't it.

I think I have got it too - I have started itching and have got spots on my arm - we couldn't all do the treatment on the same day as I couldn't get enough of the cream so I am worried it isnt going to work because of that.

Have read that the itching might continue for a few weeks even after successful treatment, so I am not actually sure how you know if it has worked or not?

Mines getting worse I think 😔 and now boots are out of stock. Dam 😭

eleflump · 17/02/2024 00:21

Oh no - have you tried the permethrin twice already? Is your itching getting worse?

My DS did his second treatment on Monday but is still itching - I have no idea if he still has it or not.

Have you tried Derbac-M?

Really hope you can get something sorted and feel better soon.

The itching can last up to a couple of months after. If its not helped I would ask the doctor for the oral tablet. I know people who have had numerous applications of the cream and it still hasn't helped

Totallybannanas · 21/02/2024 21:44

Thank you. I am bathing daily in coconut oil and tea tree at the moment which seems to ease it. I am covered in bruises from itching, can't seem to work out if they are new or old spots or just the reaction from the creams. I wish there was a way to test of they are gone 😭

lissie123 · 21/02/2024 21:45

Derbac m is good. If you can get it.

How did things work out for you? Hope it wasn’t too long before it cleared (I’m just desperate for a good news story! 😂)

Hi @Itchingskin - we got rid of ours using Derbac M.

We used Lyclear twice a week apart as directed before we tried this but my son was still getting new marks on his skin afterwards.

We did two Derbac-m applications a week apart for the whole family.

Make sure you put it absolutely everywhere and dont miss any spots - we used cheap toothbrushes to brush it under our nails and toenails - and leave for 24 hours.

We got into clean beds after applying the derbac-m then stripped them the morning after, washed them at 60 and tumble dried and then put clean bedding on - we did this for both applications.

We washed everything we wore the week before the first application at 60 and bagged anything that couldn't be washed at 60 and left it for ten days.

Cleaned and hoovered everywhere especially mattresses and sofas.

I was a bit frantic by this point and bought new duvets and pillows for everyone (they were due to be replaced soon anyway so it didn't seem that wasteful).

It's an absolute nightmare but this worked for us - good luck!
