Dad - pulmonary edema/respiratory failure

Hi,

My dad, 78 is currently in hospital with respiratory failure. he was admitted 36 hours ago very breathless and struggling.

He has been on diuretic medication and an oxygen mask however as soon as the mask is removed, his Oxygen SATS drop back to between 87-91%. The doctor said that they are worried that he isn't responding to the oxygen therapy.

Tonight they have changed his treatment plan to CPAP - continuous positive airway pressure. This is a non-invasive way of forcing oxygen into his lungs. I am terrified that this won't work and that we will be left with no options.

Does anyone have any experience of this. I need my dad to get better.

Does he have an underlying heart or lung condition?

Does he have congestive heart failure op?

lemmy82 · 05/02/2024 23:24

Hi,

Yes, he has heart failure. Relatively well managed. Up until a couple of weeks ago he was going out shopping, light walks in the park, out for meals etc, - generally living a decent life.
