Hi, I’m desperate for some advice please.

I get this really horrible feeling come over me (got it now) when my head feels heavy and I feel weak and hungry even though I’ve eaten. I’ve had this on and off for a couple of years, had blood tests and nothing showed up. It’s affecting my weight, I cannot diet because I feel I need sugar. I was about to go for a run but I feel weak, really feel I’ve let myself down tonight as I’ve worked hard to get to this stage with my running but I just don’t have the energy. Any advice would be great please, many thanks

How long ago were your last blood tests? Maybe request more recent ones inc thyroid, b12/folate, vitamin D, ferritin, HBA1C and get a printout or look online for the actual result figures and the lab reference ranges.
You can be marked as ‘normal’ right at the low end of the labs reference range but still feel awful, as normal isn’t the same as optimal.

You can have low blood sugars without having diabetes which won't show on a blood test. If you buy a wee glucose machine from Amazon they're relatively cheap and easy to use, you can check your sugar level when you feel like this and if this shows that's the cause you can take the proof to your GP.

Thanks for your replies

i had a blood test less than a year ago. I was hoping (I know that sounds bad) that something would show up so I can get treated. I thought it would be a B12 deficiency with the symptoms I have they pretty much match what I’ve read online.

thanks for the tip about getting a machine, I will invest in one, never gave it a thought so thanks x

Could you be thirsty instead? Sometimes feels like hunger. Try sugary drink of any sort

MymateDave · 06/02/2024 14:22

What were your b12 results at your last test?

AnnaMagnani · 06/02/2024 14:25

I find I can't tell the difference between hungry and thirsty often. So I eat rather than drink.

Have you checked your blood pressure? Episodes of low BP are easily mistaken for thinking you have low blood sugar as again they make you lie down and eat a load of carbs.

I put loads of weight on doing that.

I thought it would be a B12 deficiency with the symptoms

You can be symptomatic at the low end of normal. Levels in the U.K. are set really low. Find out what your actual figure is compared to the reference range. If it’s at the lower end, book into an aesthetics place that offers the injections, you won’t get them via GP in the normal range. BUT, do check all the other blood test results and reference ranges too as there are similar crossover symptoms for many deficiencies.
