I've just been on a run for the first time since....er...school, and my throat blimming HURTS! Does anyone else get this, and can you prevent it?

I really am pathetically unfit, and only managed a 10 minute run

By the end of it my throat felt like it was on fire...awful ragged pain. I tried breathing through my nose, but that didn't help (just made my nose hurt).

Having a glass of water afterwards helped, but I don;t really want to carry water round with me.

I think I'm lergic to running. I should give it up, shouldn't I?

Give up or keep your mouth shut while running maybe

LadyOfWaffle · 21/03/2008 14:30

Run with your mouth closed. I far as I can remember.

..eat yoghurt before you start to coat your throat and go slowly and work up to speed slowly so you are not taking deep "panting" breaths.
Do brisk "power" walking alternating with 1 minute of faster jog/run to minimise the effect.
As you get fitter this should subside.

Miggsie - yoghurt! Yes! that's a very good idea. Thanks

Yes I used to get this, a dreadful burning in my throat and chest.

I started to run slower, with smaller steps, and get into a rhythm of breathing.

It does go if you do this. Run like you are about 70.

OK I've eaten a yoghurt, and I'm off out for a bit of geriatric-style running. Wish me luck!

That was much better.

And for the first time in my life I think I had that post-exercise endorphine thing.
