Sling causing more pain than fracture

Bit of a weird one, maybe. Wondered if anyone had experience...

I came off a bike on a hill at speed on Monday, and have a fractured proximal humerus (top of arm). Haven't seen the X-rays, but apparently it's a multi-part fracture and they did a CT on Tuesday presumably to see if it needed surgery.

I had no discharge information. They gave me a neoprene sling, but it started causing me cramps in my forearm and didn't do anything for the pain from the fracture, which largely occurs when I stand up, sit down, or move sharply. I spoke to a nurse after the CT scan who said it was okay to take it out the sling occasionally - it didn't need to be worn 24/7.

Initially, it was bearable, but last night the pain in my back and shoulders became so agonising I couldn't sleep. Being a multiple abdominal surgery shoulder-tip-pain specialist, I promptly stuck a heat pad on it, which got rid of it - and I went straight to sleep. As of today, I had spot pain in my forearm, and pain around my back, chest and shoulders - obviously all muscular or trigger point, none of it near the actual fracture.

My preference is to remove the sling, keep the shoulder straight, not twist it, keep moving and stretching, but I'm absolutely terrified the bone fragments don't set. Just wondered if anyone had any experience with this - it genuinely feels I either have whiplash or the sling/breakage is just messing up my muscles/posture?
