Help - fish bone!

Last night I was eating smoked mackerel and came across a couple of small bones, which I removed. However I am also pretty sure I swallowed one - felt it in my mouth and didn't manage to spit it out. Since then I have had the feeling that the bone is stuck in my throat. My throat isn't painful, I can swallow/breathe/eat/drink without difficulty, but just feel like something is stuck there. I can't see anything at the back of my throat/tonsils, and it feels like it's stuck further down, around my neck/top of my chest. It is a horrid nagging feeling and is driving me mad! I've tried swallowing bread and various other things but no joy.

The general consensus online seems to be A&E for stuck fish bones, but that seems quite extreme! As I'm not in much pain and can't even be sure there's a bone there - it could just be that my throat is scratched. I'm also wondering if the feeling could be acid reflux, which I do suffer from and can also make me feel like there is something stuck there.

I once had this, it was awful, but the feeling did ease so it must have been a scratch. I’d probably take some paracetamol to see if the sensation eases, if it is a scratch then that should ease the feeling, if not then do remember to pack your phone charger and snacks when going to a&e.

You do need A&E as they have the right equipment to check if it’s there or not.

@PlasticSurgeonWithASidelineAsAStuntWoman @DustyLee123 Ahh thank you! I have an urgent care centre at my local hospital - wondering if that would be better than A&E?

How are you op? Did you get seen? My first couple of jobs after qualifying as a nurse were on ENT wards, we frequently had people sent up to our treatment room from A&E with a fish bone stuck. It’s a quick job to fish then out (no pun intended) when you have the right gear. Hope you are sorted.

Yes thanks, went to A&E yesterday afternoon. They were very helpful and thorough, had a look down my throat with a camera but couldn't see anything so said it probably just scratched my throat on the way down. Apparently very common. Felt a bit bad for wasting their time but good to have peace of mind!

Never a waste of time, better to get it checked. They can cause real issues if there are spiked in and left to fester.
