Hi there, I wonder if anyone in the know can advise at all please. I’ve been asked to make a telephone appointment with my GP to chat about my liver function result. It’s 36 u/L. When I google ranges it all seems to be in iu/L instead and I can’t work out if there is a difference. I’m hoping that what I’m working out is correct and it’s not too high really-just a little, and I can sort it with diet and exercise, but the different measures and ranges mentioned in various web pages are confusing me. Thank you if you can help!

All labs have varying reference ranges, but an ALT at 36 u/l is within the normal range of most - albeit the upper end of normal.

Factors affecting could be anything from alcohol intake to diet (eg. harder to digest foods like meat and fried stuff etc).

Thank you very much for your reply. Our lab seems to have 33u/l as the upper end of normal range so that must be why they want to speak to me. I don’t drink alcohol at all really (the odd drink once in a blue moon at an occasion at the very most) so I suspect it’s diet causing the issues. I also have raised HBA1C (and very slightly ab normal results on a couple of my cholesterol figures but they don’t seem bothered about that) and they want to redo that in a couple of weeks to check for type 2 diabetes so I expect it’s all related. I’m doing what I can and am 18lbs down in Jan so hopefully will see a difference soon. Thanks so much again!
