ill in Thailand

Currently in Thailand. Have the worst upper stomach pain that radiates to my back, kept my bed bound yesterday with no relief from paracetamol or antacids (thought it could be indigestion). Now my legs are so bruised and I have a rash that does not disappear under pressure/glass.

Don't feel too bad within myself, no fever or anything. Just in pain more than anything.

Any idea of what this could be?

We're on a small island with just a tiny little medical centre, no one seems to speak English. Heading to Phuket on Tuesday so might be able to get some better medical advice then. Just want to cry 😞

And if it is dengue fever the local medics will be the experts.

HappyHamsters · 28/01/2024 11:20

Oh poor you, hope you get the medical help you need soon, wishing you the best. Don't leave it, you need urgent help.

toddlermam · 28/01/2024 12:46

Doctors pretty certain that it's just bad indigestion and that the rash is from a reaction to the mosquito bites. Tried to send me on my way with a £400+ bill for rash cream and omezepole. I paid for the consultation and left. I do have insurance but they said I'd have to pay upfront and claim it with the insurance. Maybe I'm being stupid but just felt like I was being ripped off with no tests. I think I will see if we can go to Phuket tomorrow instead of Tuesday.

You must speak to your insurers urgently. They might decline to cover the bill you have paid if you don't speak to them asap.
I was taken ill abroad a couple of years ago. The t&c of my policy was that I should contact them first, unless It was a serious accident resulting in admission to hospital. In any event, anything more than essential emergency care had to be cleared with them first. They checked my GP records first to make sure my declaration of pre existing conditions was correct, then they dealt directly with the hospital and paid for everything.
Did you contact one of the main medical centres on Phi Phi?

Sorry OP, but I don’t think that is a ‘rash’, the bruises aren’t superficial. Please call your insurers for advice on next steps. If you are in so much pain how will you travel to Phuket tomorrow?

TokyoSushi · 28/01/2024 14:15

It sounds a bit more than indigestion... How are you travelling to Phuket? Can you go today?

mmgirish · 28/01/2024 14:26

When you go to Phuket, get a taxi to take you to Bangkok Hospital Phuket. It's in Phuket Town. It is by far the best hospital.

Good idea to go to Phuket earlier - Bangkok Hospital is excellent there.

Did the doctors do normal observations on you when you went to clinic - temp, BP, heart rate?

Not19foreverpullyourselftogether · 29/01/2024 15:27

How are you OP, thinking about you and hope you’ve managed to find decent healthcare.

shreknjumps · 29/01/2024 15:36

Go to Phuket asap, that could be a DVT with how swollen you are

scaredofff · 30/01/2024 02:21

How are you feeling op?

fairymary87 · 30/01/2024 02:26

Girl go and get checked. If it was your son you wouldn't settle, don't put yourself on the back burner

Lovelyjubblydrinkingbubbly · 31/01/2024 00:28

You need a second opinion asap

whyamiawakestill · 31/01/2024 01:22

Sorry for not updating sooner! Couldn't log back into my account for a few days. I ended up going to Phuket however surprisingly I felt a lot better than I did when I woke up in the morning, then again the next morning felt almost normal! So never ended up going to the hospital. The rash also faded too, so no idea what it was! I was taking regular gaviscon so maybe it was bad indigestion, but I'm just glad the pain is gone. Way to ruin my few days in the Phi Phi islands though 🙁 thanks all for checking in!
