Hand hold while I wait for ambulance for daughter

Currently waiting for an ambulance for my daughter. Been sent as category 3. She's not been right for a few days now, not eating, not drinking, just laying slumped on her bed. This morning she collapsed in the bathroom and went really pale.

She has a learning disability and complex mental health problems so she can't tell me what is wrong as she doesn't verbally communicate when she feels unwell.

She was in hospital a couple of weeks back due to an infection (see previous threads) so I hope it's nothing to do with that.

I'm so worried, I feel sick.

oh no. I hope you’re ok. My adult son is non verbal with severe learning disabilities so I get how difficult it can be when they can’t tell you how they’re feeling and also how difficult it would be to get them to the hospital! I’d have to use an ambulance too as it would take 2 of us to get him in the car and someone to sit with him to keep him calm.

I hope she’s feeling better soon and you get some answers.

Rightsraptor · 27/01/2024 22:13

OP, events today have proved you did the right thing, so please ignore all those dangerous people who are telling you otherwise.

BTW it's possible the ambulance crew weren't paramedics - some are ambulance technicians.

It said SORT Technician on his lapels. The one who made those comments.

@dauphinose

paramedics are people at the end of the day - someone’s dad / mum etc they are not robots . It’s a highly pressured job . They maybe could have handled it better but going from a highly traumatic scene to then someone who could have paid for a taxi must be frustrating

They are also employees- they are paid to go to the job they are sent to. 111 sent them, the ambulance service spoke to @StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance twice and agreed that they needed an ambulance- it’s the paramedics job to turn up at the case they are sent to and be professional.

It doesn’t make any material difference to them if they go to a stressful case or an easier one (except an easier one is easier for them), and they are not experts in disability/special needs, so they aren’t in a position to tell the op what her daughter can/cant/should/shouldn’t do.

I know a good deal of paramedics, and not one would object to taking a non verbal disabled woman to hospital when she was in the state the op’s daughter was.

StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance · 27/01/2024 22:37

@EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness She currently takes Lactulose and Sodium Picosulfate. Thank you for sharing what you went through with your constipation, it sounds horrendous. I still want them to check her bowels though while she's here.

Despite everyone reminding me to take some food for myself, I went and forgot 🤦‍♀️. I packed a drink but nothing to eat. I might ask for a sandwich as they offered me one last time.

@Willmafrockfit She tends to self soothe by rubbing her fingers and picking her skin so I give her a fidget popper and she then picks at that which is better.

@AmserGwely They have a brilliant LD Liaison Nurse here but she doesn't work weekends unfortunately. I will contact her on Monday if my daughter is still in.

I really hope she's ok and you followed the advice of 111 who sent the ambulance but I can also see the other side of the paramedic who may be missing calls out to people with heart attacks, choking, strokes, RTA's etc... so I wouldn't put a complaint in, just look after your DD and I really do hope she's ok

If a call for someone with a more urgent need came in, they would go to them first and rightly so. I would imagine by attending to my daughter, there was an available ambulance.

I would complain based on their refusal to help. In past experiences the OP hasn't been able to move her, so for her safety she should have been helped. What if she'd collapsed again and they'd both tumbled down the stairs while her mum tried to move her alone?

Exactly. I had 2 heavy bags, a blanket as well as trying to help my daughter down the stairs and hoping she doesn't collapse again. She did amazing coming out of the house today, I'm so proud of her.

I think I might put a complaint in once my daughter is home and better.

I hope your daughter will feel better soon.

I think I would attempt to work with her regularly at using taxis so that when an emergency arises it’s not an abnormal situation for her. The fact that you were able to get her to the ambulance without assistance just shows it’s possible. as there might be times (like in my trust atm) where an ambulance won’t be sent due to the low priority of the call.

im sad the crew didn’t help you though as despite how pissed pff they maybe, that’s not acceptable, without being there though I can’t comment on what their thinking around the situation was

They have no right to be pissed off. My daughter has just as much right to healthcare as anyone else. If they are going to be pissed off about a non verbal woman with disabilities then they need to get another job.

I think that's Special Operation and Respone Team? I had an ex many years ago who was one. He was a massive cunt too.

simonell · 27/01/2024 22:51

Hope your daughter gets well soon.
Why do the British accept such awful service ? a service that you pay for through your taxes btw ?
Someone chooses to do a job they accept that job and then complain when they have to do that job ? If you work in any of these jobs your grievance is with your government not with a young disabled lady and her poor mother.
She has explained numerous times why she called 111 and why an ambulance was sent.
They are not stretched to their limit because of this patient they are stretched to their limit because they are under funded. Can't be doing with people who work in a caring profession that couldn't even show compassion to a toaster ! Pair of tossers 😤 just made the whole thing worse didn't they !

Differentstarts · 27/01/2024 18:03

111 always send ambulances most people refuse them and find their own way there. But obviously in your case its different due to your daughters disabilities however if the paramedics didn't help get her out the house anyway and she just walked out she could of just walked out to a taxi but you will know for another time

All these posters who know better than 111 and the Ambulance service and the OP what her daughter needs...

StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance · 27/01/2024 18:19

Can people please take their ambulance debate elsewhere? I'm really stressed about my daughter and really don't need telling that I was wasting peoples time.

She's being admitted, you followed medical advice and you know your daughter

I hope she recovers soon

Newstarto · 27/01/2024 23:00

It’s a failure of the system but you didn’t need an ambulance.

I had 2 heavy bags, a blanket as well as trying to help my daughter down the stairs

I completely understand your predicament but there should be another solution rather than trained paramedics who save lives. No-one’s life was in danger and carrying bags isn’t a trained professionals job.. Perhaps there should be a cat 3 service which isnt trained professionals.

You don't know that!

YOU don't know the diagnosis

Tinybirdie · 27/01/2024 23:02

It takes a special kind of idiot to question an ambulance service being provided in this situation. The person should be afforded all available services to ensure she has equitable access to healthcare as anyone else.

I hope she recovers soon. Having a poorly child is terrible. Facing this with a child who cant verbalise how they feel most be horrendous.

Newstarto · 27/01/2024 23:02

yes she does. But they weren’t providing healthcare, they literally just drove her to the hospital. Hence why another solution might be preferable

Exactly. It’s their job to provide a service to the people the ambulance service tells them to, not to be the moral gatekeepers of medical care.

Im glad your daughter is getting the help she needs and deserves.

DyslexicPoster · 27/01/2024 23:04

I wonder if the paramedic ment what he said literally as in the crew can't treat constipation at home so would taxiing you in with out giving treatment?

Ignore the snippy posters. Once my ds had put some lego up his nose. He was 6 and non verbal. 111 said take him straight to A&E because of the dangers of not being able to communicate. Luckily it shot out while I was debating how it got so far up his nose.

That isn’t their call, and it doesn’t make any difference to them. They get paid either way, for going to the jobs they are sent to.

If they want to be the gatekeepers of ambulances then they need to move into politics, commissioning, planning or some other form of bureaucracy.

simonell · 27/01/2024 23:06

@Bluelightbaby
I feel so bad for you if only you could all be compensated in some way for giving up your voluntary free time ? Oh wait !

Newstarto · 27/01/2024 23:08

I would imagine it’s less about money and more about watching people die who they didn’t get in time because of time wasters

simonell · 27/01/2024 23:09

@Newstarto you know an intestinal blockage can kill you right ?

based on this thought process no-one can have an opinion on anything unless they’re the bloody prime minister…..
