Ibuprofen & gaviscon (medicine question)

Can anyone tell me if I can take gaviscon after ibuprofen? Cannot get through to my local pharmacy!
I took ibuprofen for my sciatic type pain at 4pm which helped soooooo much however it has now made my reflux a thousand times worse! I am retching, I have a horrible horrible feeling in my upper chest/throat it's actually making me feel short of breath. Google has mixed answers some say no, some say yes and actually google says not to take if you have reflux which of course I didn't bother checking beforehand. I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack I'm desperate for an anti acid😭 this is horrid

You can buy Omeprazole over the counter, supermarkets often have it. Go and get some it’s much more effective than Gaviscon. I’m surprised you haven’t been prescribed it for your reflux?

Honestly, I don't know either. They have given it to me in the past but it was only a temporary thing as they said it wasn't good to take long term. This was back in October. My issues were just stomach pain and weird bowel issues that lasted over a month at a time. Now I've gone to them with vomiting and nausea and horrendous reflux and they said if the h pylori stool is negative they'll refer to gastro and maybe put me back on a PPI so unsure if that will be omeprazole. I have the callback next week to discuss next steps

@emilylouisex1 you will be fine, have a big gulp of gaviscon for now. Try to eat some bland food to give your stomach some extra lining

Thank you. I only have the tablet form. Will that still be fine? I hope it doesn't make me worse, I shouldn't google when I have anxiety

Of course you can take gaviscon. The advice to avoid taking it with medication/ within 2hrs is because it causes a physical barrier to some drugs being absorbed. The ibuprofen is long out of your stomach by now and even if it weren’t the worse that would happen is that it’d take longer for it to absorb because it’d be sloshing about in gaviscon before it got to your small bowel.

Ibuprofen isn’t the best thing to take if you have reflux as it can irritate the stomach, a good GP/ nurse practitioner will prescribe omeprazole or lansoprazole to take daily if having to use drugs like ibuprofen/ naproxen on a regular basis

Should I be going to a&e? Or just wait for it to pass, the reflux has settled down a bit now after gulping water but my goodness I now have really bad rib pain. Oh I'm so tired of this it's horrendous. Wish I could get a quicker referral for these issues.

Rib pain can be triggered by acid reflux. Would 111 not triage you before suggesting A&E?

emilylouisex1 · 26/01/2024 20:56

@auntyElle no you're right. I'm probably fine. I'm now a tad hungry and the pain and reflux is easing as time goes on so I think il wait and see how I get on within the next hour or so. I just panic when it comes to my health and think the worst.
