Cough or chest infection?

I've had hacking cough since Wed first thing and been feeling run down with dry throat since Sun. DD is ill with presumably same virus coughing away and temp and now has antibiotics for ear infection. I've had slight temp (just over 38) on/off since last night and felt shivery, also run down from looking after DD and her not sleeping well. Been coughing up mucus since Wed, basically since the cough started, and just coughed up a (TMI !) sizeable chunk of green/yellow stuff into the sink. Is coughing up "stuff" actually a good sign as you're fighting the infection? I'm not so run down that I'm unable to do things.

I was told by a paramedic that coughing up green stuff is not a sign of infection. They go off temperature, O2 sats and respirations.

Thanks @DustyLee123 I'm hoping it is just viral.
