H e noticed it last night. Tis very small, painful when he prods it and 'disappears' and reappears.
I can't get him to docs before Tuesday. Is it probably just a gland? or should I worry...please? (I am a bit worried actually...)

Thre is a lymph gland under the jawlinr that swells when you have an infection. Nothing to worry about. Mine comes up whenever I have a coldsore.

(disclaimer: I'm not a medic of any sort.)

NOT worried

why would you be worried?

it sounds like a gland - don't prod it, it bloody hurts! He is probably fighting off an infection

filthymindedlurker · 20/03/2008 10:45

Thanks thready, that's what I thought but I'm not a medic either
MP, I'm worried because my family is rather affected by cancer at the moment and I am feeling fretful and paranoid about it, ok? The last time someone close to me had a small lump in neck, it was biopsies, lumpectomies, radiotherapy, infections, chemo and 2 years of hell. None of which I wish for my darling 10-year-old.
I know I'm being silly which is why I'm posting on here rather than demanding appointments at GPs!

oh and the lump is not in the 'usual' place where his glands come up when he is poorly IFSWIM. It's halfway between ear and chin.

Half way between ear and chin IS where glands come up, surely? Why not make a GP appointment now and take him along? Then you will put your mind at rest. And there might be an ear infection or something that your GP will spot so you can keep an eye on things. Please don't worry when a visit to the GP will put your mind at rest!

filthymindedlurker · 20/03/2008 13:42

no no, I mean along the bottom of his jawbone, between ear and chin. I'm aware you're thinking I'm a neurotic idiot MP I'm not, It's just that I can't get him to GPs before next tuesday....(our GP has a wondrous system where unless you can ring up by 8.30 and grab an appointment, you have to wait until the next day.

get an appointment if you're worried, but i once had a really weird infection that brought out all sorts of glands i was unaware of. there's a string of them under your jawbone and more little bobbly ones under the chin. freaked me right out at the time.

filthymindedlurker · 20/03/2008 13:46

why? It's ok, I'm almost definiteley convinced it's a gland. Thanks everyone.

Oh FMV,

Please try not to worry, if you are really concerned, speak to the Dr's receptionist, and see if a doc can see you at the end of afternoon surgery today. I have done this before, it can work if you are insistent.
